The Group Army or Army Group is a Terrible Translation Mistake
editThe word "Chinese: 集团军" in Simplified Chinese refers to Combined Arms Armies of the Soviet Army like 6th Army (Soviet Union)(Chinese: 第6集团军), or Armies of the US Army or other nations like 6th Army (Wehrmacht) (Chinese: 第6集团军). So the Chinese: 集团军 of PLA should also be translated as Armies instead of Group Armies or Army Groups.
During its formation in 1985, PLA "Chinese: 集团军s" might be composed of 5 or even 6 divisions, as big as a Soviet Army combined arms army. Then they get smaller and smaller with the downsizing of PLA ground forces.
The word "集团军" in Chinese means "a group("集团") of Corps("军")", as Armies that day were composed of several Corps.
The word "Chinese: 军" in Simplified Chinese refers to Corps, like V Corps (United States)(Chinese: 第5军(美国)). The "Chinese: 军s" before 1985 are actually Army Corps(Chinese: 陆军军) stead of Armies. In 1985 all remaining Army Corps are converted and renamed as Armies, so the Relationship between Army Corps and Armies in PLA is as same as that in Soviet Army after 1957.
There were real Army Groups in the history of PLA ground force, as Chinese: 兵团. It is a military formation composing of three or more corps, and under the command of Field Army(Chinese: 野战军).
So MY SUGGESTION is just forget about all those silly translations, and:
- Use Field Army for "Chinese: 野战军";
- Use Army Group for "Chinese: 兵团";
- Use Army for "Chinese: 集团军";
- Use Army Corps for "Chinese: 陆军军";
- Use Corps for "Chinese: 军";
