  • On March 16, 1529, Kuei O was made titular minister of Personnel and concurrently grand secretary. At this level he came to take part in the highest decisions. Some years earlier (July, 1524), when Chang Fu-ching and Kuei O, responding to imperial summons, arrived at Peking from Nanking, a number of officials wanted to make life difficult for them because of their flattery of the emperor in the Ta-li i controversy. Once, fearing an attack, Chang and Kuei fled to the house of the marquis of Wu-ting, Kuo Hsün (q. v.), and escaped bodily harm. Later, Kuo was put in charge of the imperial bodyguard. Early in 1529, when disclosure of his receiving bribes came to light, Chang made every effort on his behalf. Kuei O, however, ascertaining that Kuo had fallen into the emperor’s bad graces, accused him of other misdeeds, and as a consequence Kuo Hsün was cashiered. At first, Kuei’s relations with Chang were quite friendly. As years went on, however, they became estranged. By 1529, when Kuei also entered the Grand Secretariat, their relations were even more strained.
