Please so not delete the trivia about Hanson's love of baking again. You are not the only one who knows of Gus Hanson's many hobbies.

Re your analysis of his game Evercat. I am fine with it all but the phrase "Implied odds and pot odds seem to form a large part of his game."... the implication being that these aren't a critical part of the game of other players who earn their living through poker. If that is true then this poker bubble is going to bust hard one day not too long from now! Pcb21| Pete 15:08, 15 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

second highest pot?

edit

can someone confirm he won the "second" highest pot in high stakes poker? I'm almost sure in the later seasons it had higher pots

Look-a-like?

edit

Known for being a Willem Dafoe look-a-like? Hadn't heard that before... is it really relevant on wikipedia? He is known for being a great poker player, not for looking like willem dafoe.

Gus is about 25 years younger than him. He absolutely DOES NOT look anything like him at all.

I concur, mentioning Gus Hansen as a Willem Dafoe look-a-like is ridiculous, and has nothing to do with poker; therefore irrelevant. --DavidD4scnrt (talk) 03:32, 31 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

your reversions

edit

Do you understand that you keep removing things that CAME FROM THE HORSE'S MOUTH -- live broadcast and print interviews, as well as pretty big articles about him both here and abroad?

Cite your sources. Login as a user. Don't add POV as fact, even if it is the subject's POV (like, "I'm the best soccer player ever" or "in absolute command of the equity calculations necessary to play high level poker" or calling a common expertise "unusual"). Don't add multiple redundant links. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a platform. 2005 05:45, 21 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
Try getting your hands on some industry and trade papers with in-depth analyses.

Poker Tramp

edit

Just to point out, if you google search for "gus hansen" "poker tramp" you will get results attributing this nickname to him. Essexmutant 08:33, 16 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes, only eleven, which is about 500 less refernces than should merit a listing as a nickname. "Great Dane", for instance, manages 628 mentions. Just because somebody calls a player some name on a couple message boards doesn't mean we should list that name as someone's nickname. 2005 09:26, 16 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
How about adding to that number how many people heard that nickname used on TV broadcasts and radio interviews referring to him that way? (IIRC, it was regarding his travelling only to the big tournaments....)
What broadcasts specifically? the name obviously has no merit as a significant nickname since it isn't used anywhere online. We can have nicknames that are just vanity creations otherwise we'll be faced with The Poker Dork or the Poker Whining Nine Bracelet Crybaby or anything else. Nicknames should come fromofficial sites or widespread use online. 2005 00:16, 24 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
So "real life" doesn't count as much as "online life"? ;P Mad Gus is a Britishism. The Poker Tramp I've heard as recently as last month's cable/local (re-)broadcasts. They are both in use offline.

is there a standard for external links?

edit

that fan site's writing is laughable. (backgammon is called a "card game")

Good catch. I'll remove it. 2005 00:13, 24 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
also-a lot of the profile pages are redundant. some have good galleries attached to the site, others have unique trivia. but some are just obvious rewriting of the various interviews out there.

DVD+book(?)

edit

is someone going to work in that he is in a couple of DVD's and supposedly wrote a book? (i can't find the book on amazon, just the DVD's). thanks!

vandalism

edit

i'm sure you guys are all savvy enough to realise that just because we share an IP address doesn't mean we are all the same person.

Why don't you register then to differentiate yourselves? Essexmutant 07:30, 25 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

creating categories

edit

how nice of you to create the GIN PLAYERS category. :)

why didn't you do the same thing when i was trying to get BACKGAMMON PLAYERS (and DANISH BACKGAMMON PLAYERS) to work? there are quite a few of them, some of them world champions.

Why don't you? It's not my job to do what you ask. Wikipedia is an open environment. Essexmutant 09:34, 1 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
you can check to see that those categories were put in for gus before, but the editor's comment when repeatedly removed was: NO SUCH CATEGORY (i believe this happened a few times -- the eds just kept removing the cats, yet DID NOT BOTHER TO SIMPLY CREATE THEM, or leave them in until someone else could do so).
You could have created the category yourself, so it is not valid to shout at others for not doing it. --Maitch 10:24, 1 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Strangest message of the year. The rest of us don't work for you. If you are too lazy to do things, let alone do them right, please don't screw them up. 2005 22:21, 1 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
But "people from AOL" aren't shouting when they type all in caps! ;D

I miss this quote, only because it's very telling of what he's really like!

edit

"I am a very individual person. I like gambling. I love what I do and I love the fact that I don’t have to answer to anyone. It sounds egotistical, but if I have to choose between you and me, it’s me, baby. As far as my situation is concerned right now, this way of life gives me a lot of freedom — no girlfriend, no ties, and I’m not looking. I like to hang out and have fun. I like my independence. I don’t want to make promises I can’t keep."

Quotes should go on Wikiquote anyway. Essexmutant 18:22, 15 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Where should quotes *about* the person go? Other entries have them directly on the main page, before or after the "personal quotes".

Style of play

edit

"He seems to focus his play on maximizing his implied odds". I'm not sure what is meant here, perhaps "maximizing the expected value of his hands by calculating the implied odds accurately" (everyone wants to do that so that's not his "style") or "wants to get into situations where the implied odds are good" (again, that's quite obvious and I wouldn't call that his "style")? My earlier attempt to clarify it resulted in a POVish sentence, and the current version of this section is not much better than that. Also, "Perhaps most importantly, he is a probability expert, in command of the equity calculations necessary to play high level poker" sounds really POVish. Any ideas on improving this section? --Zoz (t) 22:53, 31 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

In the meantime, I removed these sentences. --Zoz (t) 23:07, 31 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
Removing it is a nice improvement. 2005 23:44, 31 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

All-rounder?

edit

Should Gus Hansen feature on List of all-rounders in games of skill? (See discussion on Talk:List of all-rounders in games of skill.) -- JocK 18:56, 7 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Nicknames?

edit

I would like to remove the nicknames "Gamblin' Gus" and "Gatlin Gun". I have watched Gus on countless broadcasts of the WPT, EPT, High Stakes Poker, and PSIT, and I have never heard anyone mention either of these names. Has anyone else heard him referenced as either of these ridiculous names?

Go ahead and get rid of them. 2005 23:02, 3 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
I think I heard "Gamblin' Gus" on the WPT, but I've never heard "Gatlin Gun". --Maitch 21:37, 8 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
heard both over the years....they usually say "Gatlin Gun Gus"....
okay.....so, how about Gussie or Gussy? everyone on Poker After Dark was calling him that! :D

Gus Hansen & Full Tilt Poker

edit

Would anyone be able to add a section on Gus Hansen and his affiliation with Full Tilt Poker. Perhaps a story on how he came aboard-- with citation/ sources of course. Rumor has it that he joined the online Poker team in exchange of them taking care of his debts from the Big Game. --DavidD4scnrt (talk) 03:47, 31 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

We don't do rumor. It's unlikely there would ever be a reliable source to corroborate something like that. 2005 (talk) 10:16, 31 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Interesting statistic

edit

Along with Michael Mizrachi, Gus Hansen is the only player to have scored four 7-digit sums of money. Although I'm not sure it's entirely notable, thought some people might be interested. JaeDyWolf ~ Baka-San (talk) 23:24, 20 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
