editFYI, I deleted the reference to Cassandra (the character in Wayne' World) being born in Ha Long Bay. Cassandra speaks (and Wayne learns)Cantonese, which is not a native language of North Vietnam. It is, however, a native language of Kowloon Bay, Cassandra's actual birthplace. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.194.55.254 (talk) 05:53, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
Etymology
editThe name "Ha Long" (descending dragon) is a fairly recent name, first appearing in French nautical maps in the late 19th century. According to the Francophone Haiphong News, dragon-like creatures were sighted in the region several tines by a French captain, in 1898, 1900, and 1902). It is because of the French association of these creatures with the Asian dragon that the modern name originated. During Chinese rule, the area was known as Lục Châu and Lục Hải. During the reigns of the Ly, Tran, adn Le dynasties, it was known alternately as Hải Đông, An Bang, Vân Đồn, Ngọc Sơn or Lục Thủy.
The current etymology section reads like folk etymology with no basis in fact. DHN (talk) 22:51, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Tourist attraction
editThiên Cung cave
It is situated on the south-west side the bay, 4 km from the wharf outside of Ha Long City. The way to Thiên Cung is a perilous one, covered on both sides by thick forest. After entering a narrow gate, the grotto’s 130-meter-long girth opens up. Getting in we are more astonished in front of the very animated and splendid beauty which is made from stalactite. On the east wall of the grotto, there is a grandiose and imposing picture with characters of tales. Going out of the Thiên Cung Grotto, we have a sensation of just watching a unique, meticulous, interesting fine-art museum which is made by nature, get out of the imagine, ability and intellect of man. This grotto is recently discovered, one of the most beautiful grottoes in Ha Long Bay. Legend has it, that beautiful young lady named Mây (Miss Cloud), caught the eye of the Dragon Prince and he fell in love with her. They were betrothed, and their wedding lasted seven days and seven nights in the very center of the grotto.
In honor of the wedding, small dragons flew about through the stalactites and stalagmites, elephants danced together happily, snakes twined themselves around trees and two stone lions danced with their manes flowing in the wind. A large elephant, smartly dressed, waited for the bride and the groom. The genies of the south and north stars also came to attend the banquet, and the atmosphere was definitely animated and lively. All these scenes have been seemingly fossilized in the grotto. In the center are four large pillars supporting the "roof of heaven.” From the base to the top, many strange images seem to live in the stone: birds, fish, flowers and even scenes of human life. On the north wall of the grotto a group of fairies seem to dance and sing in honor of the wedding. Under the immeasurably high roof, stalactites make a natural stone curtain. Somewhere there is the sound of a drum beating, but it is actually just the noise made by the wind blowing through stone. Arriving at the last partition of the grotto, a natural gushing stream of water babbles throughout the year. Here are three small ponds of clear water. Legend has it, that this was where Mây bathed her 100 children, bringing them up wisely and happily into adolescence. One path meanders out of the grotto; it was the way Mây, together with 50 of her children, took to harvest new lands. The 50 remaining children, together with their father, were left to build the native land. Left behind by the mother was the natural stream described above. Geology and geomorphology
editI have recently visited this beautiful place and wanted to read up a bit more on how such a landscape evolved over geological time. However, the Geology and geomorphology section of this Wiki page is just too scientific and the English is not the best and most readable either. All in all this profusion of geologist technical jargon just leaves me frustrated and totally uninformed as to how actually Ha Long bay had evolved. I understand that all of that heavy geologist technobabble can well be comprehended by trained geologists. However, the purpose of Wikipedia as that of encyclopedias in general is to inform the average person in a language which can be understood by the average person. I just wish somebody took the time to rework this page in a more concise, informative and enjoyable fashion.
Eravian (talk) 21:03, 11 March 2016 (UTC)
In addition to Eravian's remarks, the development of the geology seems to be a bit messed up between Silurian and Permian where subduction and rain erosion processes happen successively which seems pretty unlikely. See the tabular of the geological history. 113.160.109.18 (talk) 11:07, 3 April 2016 (UTC)
Environmental damage
editI was about to do a good faith revert of edits by User:14.160.1.138, which removed content from the "Environmental damage" section, when I realized that the content itself was copied from its source. The original text is here:
- With an increasing tourist trade, mangroves and seagrass beds have had to be cleared and jetties and wharves have been built for tourist boats.
- Fuel and oil, along with tourist litter, have created pollution problems, which impact on both the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem of the islands. Human waste from portable toilets erected for tourists, finds its way into the soil and water surrounding the islands, once more altering the ecosystem functioning through increased nutrient flow.
- Game fishing, often near coral reefs are threatening many endangered species of fish. Often the fish is not consumed locally but exported to other markets around the region.
- The delicate limestone cave ecosystems are diminishing as tourists visiting the caves break off stalagmites and stalactites. Litter, including wine bottles, is dropped into cave streams and visitors exhale carbon dioxide, which has a deleterious affect on the caves. The mouths of some caves have been widened to allow tourist access. This increase in light has lead to an imbalance in the delicate links between the flora and fauna, and a decrease in the humidity of the caves.
Thoughts? There should be much more to say about environmental degradation in the Bay—especially as caused by development and tourism—than is currently present in the article, but copying and pasting straight from the source into the article is a no-no. Does anyone know of any good sources to draw from? --'dragfyret t'_ʞןɐʇc 14:06, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
Movie location?
editLooking at the photos I could swear that this bay was featured in a number of different films but I see nothing about this listed here. Is it a popular filming location? Liz Read! Talk! 00:25, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
