This article is bad
editI considered nominating it for deletion or to be merged with another article, but I don't think it would belong at HIV, and I do think that this article could some day be informative and encyclopedic. But since I don't really care enough about this article to find information and try to fix it, hopefully someone else does. thezirk (talk) 13:04, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
Avoiding HIV is vital to a healthy & successful life. As Director of HIV causes, I know that this article is correct. An epidemic of 100,000 person are newly diginose each year with HIV; a total of 1.1 Million people are infected in the USA as of 2012. Each additional year will increase 10% if HIV is taken lightly or for granted. So please protect yourself.
Why an epidemic? The reason is that HIV may be contagious after 24 hours of infection; however there are no signs of a person being infected with HIV until they are tested 6 month later. If a person is not tested they may go 5 years with no symptom, or clues that they are infected. The average time line for the first noticable symptom of HIV is the lack of energy after 5 years. After an average of 8 years; persons diagnosed with HIV will develop HIV opportunistic diseases and other ongoing onset of medical problems, to include HIV dementia. HIV will have a negitive profound affect on a persons financial, emotional, social and physical health. Prevention is key. Drugs & alcohol may cause impaired locigal thinking. Like HIV, Drugs destroy lives. Co-dependency and addicion of drugs plays a major role in HIV infection. Please stay safe, and say no to drugs.
Epidemic of testing? HIV status is determined by HIV tests. These screen for antibody responses that vaccines are designed to produce. In addition to vaccines, dozens of other co-factors unrelated to HIV are known to cause false positive tests results. Unfortunately, few doctors ever take the time to rule out these co-factors. Instead, doctors refer HIV positives to other specialists who assume that the first doctor conducted a proper diagnosis… In some cases, six or more doctors are involved in the treatment of healthy asymptomatic patients without checking to see if anyone ever conducted an actual clinical diagnosis. It’s like a drunk-driving arrest by four policemen who incorrectly assume that someone else conducted the sobriety test. --82.161.30.183 (talk) 04:11, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
Semiprotection
editWould it be possible to semiprotect this article? It is being vandalized on a long-term basis by an IP vandal who uses a different (but closely related) IP for each edit. I attempted to have the spam site blacklisted, but the vandal simply inserts a space or uses a different suffix to avoid the block. Keepcalmandcarryon (talk) 16:03, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
PLWHA
editIn South Africa, the abbreviation PLWHA (people living with HIV/Aids) is often used to refer to people who live with people who have HIV. The husband of an HIV+ wife would therefore also be considered "living with HIV" even if is is HIV negative. The same applies to non HIV+ children whose parents have HIV/Aids -- they too are "living with HIV" (at least, this is how the term is often used in South Africa).
Therefore I don't think PLWHA should redirect here, or else the term should be defined in the article. -- leuce (talk) 18:29, 26 January 2009 (UTC) tight huh —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.90.200.60 (talk) 02:39, 3 June 2009 (UTC)
The right to have sex and children
edit"Believing that these women should not get pregnant is a huge violation of their reproductive rights."
Really? It is a violation of somebody's rights to believe something different?
"These women are frequently denied contraceptives due to the idea that they should not be having sex."
Really? What where when whaaaa?
"Once a pregnancy occurs, the issue solely revolves around the safety and health of the child."
Really? Solely? The doctors only treat the baby and not the parent for the mutual HIV?
"This seems to be a good thing, except for the fact that the mother is left helpless and her needs are left neglected."
So. Much. Bullshit. GreaseballNYC (talk) 20:33, 14 December 2016 (UTC)
Glaring Omission This & The HIV Article
editIt is interesting to note that we read 'Diagnosis' and 'Genetics', in both this and the HIV article, but neither show anything in reference to 'Signs and Symptoms' that have been associated with HIV/AIDS. What other red flags prompt an individual to be tested, not by what they have done, but how they feel. What urges someone to go to a doctor? What prompts a doctor to refer a patient for further testing? Does the body become ill with pnuemonia, or just swollen lymphnodes to arouse suspicions that someone may be HIV infected? I would think that after 35+ years, doctors have figured out that someone's personal history isn't always neccessary to suggest the testing needed to fully diagnose HIV.
Can anyone respond to this?
I will also add this to the HIV article's talk section.

- It's impossible distinguish signs and syntoms caused by HIV with other illnesses until the AIDS phase. There are hundreds of illnesses which cause swollen lymphnodes. Don't confound HIV with AIDS. --Skyfall (talk) 06:27, 28 May 2017 (UTC)
- it's covered in the HIV/AIDS page right at the beginning and that is where it belongs. There is even an own page Signs_and_symptoms_of_HIV/AIDS Xtothel (talk) 08:57, 9 August 2017 (UTC)
