mention of "HM hired surveying vessel Beaver" on Farewell Harbour

edit

It was unclear to me here whether what is meant was HMS Beaver (1855) or Beaver (steamship), the latter being the well-known Hudson's Bay Company steamship/service vessel; because of the HM indication in the citation on Farewell Harbour, I have pointed it at HMS Beaver, though without disambiguating it to redlink.Skookum1 (talk) 05:56, 8 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

HMS Beaver (1855) appears not to be the relevant Beaver. The naval vessel was a gunboat that was so badly built that she never saw active service. I would not let the designation "HM hired survey vessel Beaver" throw you. Earlier in the century the Royal Navy made extensive use of hired armed vessels that it referred to as, for instance, "HM hired brig Telegraph. These vessels were not commissioned and so were not designated "His Majesty's Ship". The vessel you seek is probably the steamship Beaver. Acad Ronin (talk) 14:20, 8 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
