Construction

@Pickersgill-Cunliffe - I found this in the Royal Gazette of Jamaica (Kingston) of Saturday 22 April 1826, page 22. "SHIPPING AND COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE: On Saturday [presumably 15 April] the Government schooner Magpie was launched from the yard of Messrs. Shepherds, at Port-Antonio. She went off in fine style." Sourced in British Newspaper Archive. I cannot really do anything with this myself as I do not have easy access to the refs already used for this, to assess/compare.

No other mention of Shepherds' boatbuilding activities (nor of "McLean" as builder) around that time in the Royal Gazette, and only brief mention of the circumstances of her loss. There was a fuller report of the loss in the English papers in October, essentially the testimony of the surviving mate, Charles McLean, which is certainly more than in the article on both the loss and McLean/Meldrum's rescue (but that may be summarised from more extensive accounts in the sources, to which, again, I do not have handy access). @Davidships: I've added the Royal Gazette of Jamaica report as a note, as the dates of launching differ considerably. Having gone through a large quantity of period newspaper reports I've added what details I can, while avoiding some of the more detailed accounts that both disagree with each other and with the modern (and more reliable?) source. • Suggest rephrasing the lede to state that she was the lead or name ship of her class.

• Suggest that you tell the reader that the guns were smoothbores in the infobox and main body
