edit"Seven ships of the Royal Navy have been named HMS Monmouth, after the Welsh town; the name also recognises James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth, the "Black Duke", in whose honour the current ship flies a black flag from the mainmast."
I added the second line as the current ship does fly the flag, is nicknamed the "Black Duke", &c... [1]
Do we know for sure the ship was originally named for the town? In 1666/7 the Duke was still loyal, and as he rebelled in 1685 there would be a good eighty years before they gave another ship of the same name, by which time he was admired again as a Good Loyal Protestant. The RN page is pretty vague about what the ship is named for, but she is classed as a "Duke class" frigate and clearly is considered to have a connection to the Duke as well as Monmouth itself.
