Egyptian service... hoax?

edit

Its been niggling me for a while, but the more I think about it, the more I believe that this submarine's service with the Egyptian Navy is a hoax (or at best misinformation). Accordingly, I have removed the information from this and the navigation template (Template:Oberon class submarine).

The information in the article is unsourced. None of the books on submarines I have read recently mention the Egyptian Navy as an operator of the Oberon class, most associate Egyptian submarine operations with the four Romeo class submarines operated by that naval force. The bit that really gets me is the claim that "Secondary sources do not report Oberon's name while in Egyptian service." ... secondary sources such as Jane's Fighting Ships will name the vessel, and a claim that no sources report the name of a warship strains credibility.

If it is decided that this is a hoax, Category:Oberon class submarines of the Egyptian Navy will need to be deleted. If reliable sources can be found to back this information up, feel free to revert me and cite. -- saberwyn 20:31, 14 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

After extensive internet based research, I have discovered what I believe to be an accurate timeline for the movement of HMS Oberon and the Egypt story:
Paid off December 1986;
Sold to Seaforth Group during January 1987 for intended resale to Egypt (Along with exHMS_Walrus_(S08));
Left Portsmouth under tow for Immingham Febuary 2nd 1987 for refit carried out by Humber Ship Repairers;
Renamed "Seaforth B" (Walrus renamed "Seaforth A";
The proposed sale to Egypt was dropped; and
Towed to Grimsby and Broken up 1991.
I believe this accounts for the Sale to Egypt story that is on many websites. -- purp_p1 12 June 2011.
