Most Famous Inmate
editEr, surely that was T. Dan Smith hero and villain of the Poulson affair. According to the wiki bio, he met Leslie Grantham in prison. Bob aka Linuxlad 07:48, 26 September 2007 (UTC)
Administrative Area
editLeyhill and Falfield are very definitely in South Gloucestershire. As a postal address, the post town is Wotton, which _is_ in Gloucestershire. Linuxlad (talk) 09:32, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
- Thats as maybe, however all HM Prisons on Wikipedia are listed by their ceremonial county (ie Gloucestershire) and NOT their administrative area. Therefore Leyhill should be listed as in Gloucestershire.
- I feared someone would make this point, based on a rather empty-headed WP policy. No-one for 50 miles around would put the area in the ceremonial county!. It is important to note somewhere that the area is in South Glos (and so eg falls under Avon & Somerset Police). Linuxlad (talk) 15:34, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
- Rubbish! The administrative area and the police authority are IRRELEVENT to the article. As the article states, Leyhill hold prisoners from ALL OVER SOUTH WEST ENGLAND, not just South Gloucestershire, or Avon and Somerset. The article does state the prison is in Falfield, so if the reader is interested they can find out things like the local authority and the local police force from there. Im reverting it as NO OTHER HM Prison article mentions the local authority area or police force. Bleaney (talk) 16:54, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
- The true location of a prison is of more than academic interest to the Press (who however always get it wrong, much to the amusement of locals).
- Moreover, the police force area is not wholly irrelevant (though it should be). I have sat in on Parish Councils at which the inability of A & S police to cross the county boundary has been reported on. Linuxlad (talk) 17:16, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
- If thats the case, then a referenced source about the confusion of the prisons location is needed. Otherwise the information appears irrelevent. As I daid earlier, the article does state that the prison is in Falfield, and the Falfield article DOES mention South Gloucestershire etc. Bleaney (talk) 17:20, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
- You appear to have a very narrow view of what is relevant. (Note also that Leyhill is not IN Falfield village) Linuxlad (talk) 17:45, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

OK, lets take a step back a moment. First of all, I do not question that Leyhill Prison IS in South Gloucestershire. My point is that ALL HM Prisons in England and Wales on Wikipedia are listed by their Ceremonial County. Why? Because all prisons have a much wider catchment area than just their Local Government or Police District. In the case of Leyhill it holds prisoners from all over the South West of England. So there is no reason to list Leyhill under anything other than Gloucestershire. This is standard with all other wiki articles. Prison articles on wiki do not list the whole address of the prison, however IF the reader is interested in more about the location of the prison, the article DOES state that the prison is in Falfield (On the outskirts maybe, but it is the nearest settlement to the prison). So the reader can click on this for more information about the exact location if they so wish (the article on Falfield covers the areas ambiguity in location).
However, if because of Leyhill's ambiguous position on the border of adminitrative areas HAS caused the prison problems before (such as in police attendance), then that IS WORTH mentioning in article IF there is a referenced source to it. As always with wikipedia, if a claim cannot be sourced it may be removed. Bleaney (talk) 17:56, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
- Thank you for re-justifying! The prison in Falfield is Eastwood Park. Leyhill is some distance away (1 mile se) on the other side of the M5 motorway, and is probably in either Tortworth or Cromhall Parish - look on getamap. I will look at the other... - If I can see a map that shows that Leyhill is in another parish, im happy for the wiki aricle to be changed. Bleaney (talk) 19:04, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
- The Parish Clerk of Falfield tells me Leyhill is in Tortworth Parish :-) (she also assures me that there are no 'cross-border' issues). Linuxlad (talk) 20:57, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
