Wikiproject Prisons

edit

If anyone's interested, I've proposed a new wikiproject for the creation and improvement of articles regarding specific prisons, internment camps, and detention centers here. --Cdogsimmons (talk) 02:02, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

DHL?

edit

§ The prison today says

There is a contracted prison shop previously run by Aramark, but now run by DHL who provide a selection of consumables for purchase by the prisoners.

Who or what is that? DHL redirects to DHL Express, which says

DHL Express is a division of the German logistics company Deutsche Post DHL providing international express mail services.

which certainly doesn't run any part of Her Majesty's prisons...or does it? --Thnidu (talk) 05:50, 14 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Requested move 4 September 2022

edit
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: not moved. per discussion consensus. Arguments via ngrams were unconvincing to discussion participants, and no other policy-based arguments were brought to bear. COMMONNAME was convincing to participants assembled here that the article should not be renamed, and that the current article is appropriate. – "HMP" is extremely common British parlance and much more commonly used than "HM Prison". For example, a Google search for "HMP Wormwood Scrubs" reveals 165,000 results, whereas "HM Prison Wormwood Scrubs" reveals 26,000. Official sources also use HMP, see here for example. If there is consensus for this move then it would be applied to all prisons in the UK (would take too long to list them all in this request). I note that in many of the infoboxes of these articles "HMP" is already the form used, suggesting that there is a recognition that this is the form that should be used, but due to spurious moves several years ago, moves are not possible without discussion due to existing re-directs. • Oppose: "Wormwood Scrubs prison" is the most popular Google search when the " " are included in the search query and has 31,100 results, while "HMP Wormwood Scrubs" has 17,500 and "HM Prison Wormwood Scrubs" has 7,080. The current "HM Prison" in this article title (and other HM Prison article titles) uses a well recognised common use name WP:COMMONNAME, and is a more user-friendly official name in the article title for users who are unfamiliar with the British abbreviation HMP. • Oppose. Yes, HMP is commonly used, but so is HM Prison and for clarity's sake I see no problem with the current naming. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:02, 7 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose. "HMP" may well be extremely common British parlance, but the wider Wikipedia readership needs to be borne in mind. "HMP" could mean anything. Keeping "HM Prison" for this and other UK places of incarceration aids understanding and facilitates first searches. I believe "HMP ..." should be a redirect.
