Harlem meer in Central Park?

edit

Harlem is named after Haarlem, so shut up I would guess that the Harlem Meer at the northeast corner of Central Park is named for Haarlemmermeer, meer being lake? I don't want to add this since I'm not sure, though. catParade 22:03, 11 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Denomination

edit

In the history section the numbers in the following text doesn't have any denomination. Does anyone knows what the denominations are? Is it Dutch gulden?

At the first sale of the highest lands along the banks on the 16th of August 1853, about 28 per acre was paid; but the average price afterwards was less. The whole area of 42,096 acres (170 km²) recovered from the waters brought in 9,400,000 forms, or about 780,000, exactly covering the cost of the enterprise; so that the actual cost to the nation was only the amount of the interest on the capital, or about 368,000.

Location: Haarlemmermeer

edit

Advice sought: on the page for Schiphol, Haarlemmermeer is given as the location. However, this is a municipality (or the polder as a whole), not a location, and I feel uncomfortable about it. Dutch Wikipedia gives 'Amsterdam' as the location, but that is not the closest city; Hoofddorp would be a more logical choice. Technically Schiphol is also indicated as a place-name locally, but that doesn't help things... Any suggestions? Classical geographer (talk) 08:12, 22 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

The airport is located in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer. The municipality itself is named after the former lake Haarlemmermeer (Lake Haarlem) in which the airport is located. I do not see any inaccuracy in using Haarlemmermeer as location, both Amsterdam and Hoofddorp would be incorrect. What exactly is your problem with using the municipality/former lake as location? Etymology of Schiphol

edit

The etymology of the name Schiphol is disputed, and likely does not refer to sunken ships 82.170.7.211 (talk) 11:25, 27 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
