Probable Welsh name

(Original research alert; probably not for inclusion in the article unless we can find a secondary source confirming this.) While reading up on the 15th-century poet-priest Maredudd ap Rhys, who may have commissioned a wall-painting at Ruabon Church, I've come across a reference in his Dictionary of Welsh Biography entry to his father's possibly having lived in "Plas Halchdun – Halkyn near Chirk probably. But Meredudd lived at Ruabon in Welsh Maelor, where he was the parish priest". As Halkyn is Helygain in Welsh and Halghton is Halchdyn, and Halghton is closer to Ruabon than Halkyn is (and is in Maelor – but English Maelor, not Welsh Maelor), it seems to me that the author has surmised incorrectly and Plas Halchdun is in fact a Welsh name for Halghton Hall. (In that particular reference, an earlier building than the present one.) So I think the name could be rendered as Plas Halchdyn in modern Welsh, to match the current preferred Welsh spelling for the settlement. Ham II (talk) 11:37, 5 September 2024 (UTC)
