Shouldn't "Thinkfree" mean it's free? $50US is not free.

marketing Sgodth 22:19, 8 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

You must have confused it with something else. It is an online suite which is free. There are other distrubutors who resell it and other similar looking software however.

Actually, I think it means that people can be "free" from Microsoft Office. –- kungming·2 | (Talk·Contact) 03:16, 9 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

edit

Isn't it a substantial omission not to provide a link to a category in which this product falls. I'm no expert but this sure sounds extremely similar to Google Docs. Speaking of which, the description of ThinkFree Docs is rather opaque. Lest this confuse anyone, ThinkFree Live sounds like Google Docs. But after reading this page I have no idea what ThinkFree Docs is. Donlibes (talk) 01:42, 17 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

"that give your users decent Office compatibility and a familiar interface regardless of their platform." Definitely seems like advertisement. 212.123.159.3 (talk) 15:37, 15 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

2014- This office suite appears to be dormant or dead.

edit

The home page of this office suite has no news since 2012 as of 08-2014. Is it defunct?

During its early history (2001) it was forward-looking as an early cloud (and local) alternative to MS Office. But it remained stuck as a Java App attempting to monetize. Google Docs, Zoho Docs, and other free, and less cumbersome cloud solutions sent it to its grave- my opinion. It was a well-designed suite. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dosware (talkcontribs) 02:13, 4 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Updates on Thinkfree Office

edit

Dear fellow Wikipedians,

Thinkfree has seen major updates on the product line, underlying technology and company strategy since the last update on its Wikipedia page. As an employee of ThinkFree, I just want to point out some of these changes and their corresponding sources.

Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestion and I will be more than happy to share and verify the relevant data. Thanks.

Thinkfree Office and Thinkfree Office Online

  • Thinkfree Office was written in 100% Java SE so that it will be able to run in any platform that has Java runtime. [1]
  • In the past, ThinkFree Office was available as desktop application as well as web-based office suite application by using Java applet. [2]
  • By delivering desktop-class feature set into web browsers, Thinkfree Office was positioned as a competitive player against Google docs and Zoho. [3]
  • However, such landscape has changed due to the security concerns about Java plugins for web browsers. Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).
  • Although the desktop version of Thinkfree Office does not use Java plugin while the web version required Java plugin, the best place for Thinkfree Office, the web, is no longer available for general usage.
  • Thinkfree has been investing for several years to overcome this restriction by implementing thHTML5-based document editors for modern web browsers. Thinkfree Office Online is currently available as a part of Netffice, an Office365-like service for Korean and Japanese market. It provides built-in storage, full featured desktop office suite for Windows, native mobile office suite for both Android and iOS as well as Thinkfree Office Online, the HTML5-based edition of Thinkfree Office.
  • Java-based Thinkfree technologies are powering the backend servers of the HTML5 edition of office suite.
  • Hancom’s flagship office suite, Hancom Office, has been developed more than 10 years now since its acquisition of Thinkfree in 2004. Written entirely in C++, Hancom Office has been positioned as serious office suite that could be positioned as alternatives for Microsoft Office for Windows. The international edition of Hancom Office has been branded as Thinkfree Office as of December 2016. [4]
  • Thinkfree Office NEO, the latest version of Thinkfree Office for Windows, is currently available for download at thinkfree.com. Japanese version has been launched in Japan under a partnership with Sourcenext Corp. [5] [6] [7]

Thinkfree Office Mobile

  • Thinkfree Mobile was initially introduced by Qualcomm along with their flagship Snapdragon chipset in 2008.[8]
  • Thinkfree worked together with experts from Sun Microsystems and Qualcomm to port JavaSE runtime for ARM-based netbook.[9]
  • Thinkfree has been quoted by Sun’s official presentation for Java One in 2009.[10]
  • The Thinkfree Office Mobile that was written entirely in Java SE edition was successfully ported to Android back in 2009. Most of the existing Java SE code was reusable for Android, and ThinkFree launched the first public edition of ThinkFree Office Mobile on July 2009.
  • Samsung and LG chose Thinkfree Office Mobile as a preloaded key feature for their first flagship Android smartphones, Galaxy S series and Optimus, respectively.[11] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16] [17]
  • In 2014, an updated version of the ThinkFree Office Mobile was preloaded in Samsung’s flagship tablet, Galaxy Note Pro, which featured PC-like user experiences and productivity. The product was branded as “Hancom Office” which is the name of its parent company.[18] [19]
  • Hancom Office Mobile, a different name of Thinkfree Office Mobile, has been preloaded in Galaxy S6, S7, Note 5, Note 7, Tab S series, Tab Pro and Note Pro series covering all the flagship models as well as other mid-to-low cost models.[20][21][22]Mycroft101 (talk) 22:24, 2 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Rebranding to Hancom Office 2020

edit

I anticipate a move the week of March 16. Thinkfree Office will be renamed to Hancom Office 2020. I will provide needed link to the press release.

Here are my proposed revisions.

Hancom Office 2020
Developer(s)Hancom Group, Inc.
Written inC++
Operating systemWindows
Available inEnglish, Korean, Russian, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Japanese, Vietnamese
TypeOffice suite
LicenseProprietary closed source
Websitewww.office.hancom.com

Hancom Office 2020 International Version is a proprietary office suite written in C++ that runs on Windows.

Hancom Office 2020 International Version includes a word processor (Hancom Word), a spreadsheet (Hancom Cell), a presentation program (Hancom Show, as well as PDF.)

While Hancom Office 2020 reads and writes Microsoft Office file formats (.doc, .xls, and .ppt) and it has a look and feel similar to Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Hancom Office 2020 also uses a different set of proprietary file formats.

Each user is allotted 1 GB of online storage space for saving documents.

Hancom Office 2020 products are available on the Hancom website and in marketplaces including AWS Marketplace with flexible licensing options with both Home and Student as well as an Enterprise version for Business & Enterprise users.

Rebranding to Thinkfree Office again from October 2023

edit

Thinkfree and Hancom are independent companies, and their respective products, Thinkfree Office and Hancom Office, operate under different licenses. Despite Hancom bundling Thinkfree products with its software and compensating Thinkfree for license usage, it is incorrect to equate Thinkfree Office with Hancom Office. Such assertions are factually wrong and represent a significant misunderstanding.

Originally, the "redirect" was established when Thinkfree Office was integrated within Hancom. Currently, with the firms separated and utilizing distinct licenses, any wiki claims that equate Thinkfree Office with Hancom Office are entirely erroneous and misrepresent the intent of an encyclopedia.

Evidence of their distinction:

Both companies, recognized as separate entities in Korea—the source of the most reliable information—demonstrate their distinct corporate structures. Juanma281984 (talk) 00:23, 14 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
