Narrow, India-specific history section
editThe historical information contained in this article is limited to just one culture and geographical base. Since handicrafts exist in almost all cultures and places, this section needs to be expanded to include far more cultures. Also, to my mind what distinguishes an item or activity as handicraft is that it is intended for use within the home of the person who made it, rather than for sale or distribution. --Redcore4 (talk) 12:07, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
So most of the content of this article seems to be on the history of handicrafts in India-any objections to this being a separate article, with a slight mention in this one, rather than being the focus of this article? Loggie (talk) 22:39, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
- That's one solution; the other would be to develop the article to cover more areas. They're not mutually incompatible models, either; see WP:SUMMARY. — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ɖ⊝כ⊙þ Contrib. 02:10, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
Merged a ridiculous WP:REDUNDANTFORK
editI merged the redundant arts and crafts article, which had zero sources, with this also totally unsourced article. It's almost never permissible to distinguish between an article here one topic and another on a different topic by nothing by a capital letter, and the Americanism "arts and crafts" in reference to handicrafts is confusing and misleading (I say that as an American), because it confuses what some would describe as non-practical, unskilled handicrafts with an intensely skilled, and extremely practical as well as aesthetic formal art movement. Most of the content of both articles was them rehashing each other. The merge was quite simple (though the list of handicrafts needs to merge further, into Template:Decorative arts). — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ɖ⊝כ⊙þ Contrib. 02:10, 16 January 2013 (UTC)
- PS: The longer explanation, adapted from the notice at Talk:Arts and crafts (now archived as Talk:Handicraft/Archive 2):
- Zero sources, much less any reliable ones have been provided for any such distinction [as someone alleged, between handicrafts meaning "professional" and arts and crafts meaning "amateur or childrens'"], or for anything in either of these wanna-be articles at all. Consequently, the entire arts and crafts page was a clear violation of WP:Verifiability policy, and WP:POVFORK. Over seven years have been provided for people to bring these articles within Wikipedia policy, and this has not happened. I have therefore done what clearly had to be done, and merged arts and crafts into handicrafts. Not the other way around, because Arts and Crafts is a formal art movement, and both readers and editors have been getting confused. One consequence of that confusion is that arts and crafts now redirects to arts and crafts (disambiguation), and needs to always do so, because about half the incoming links for arts and crafts really want the movement, and half want handicrafts. Because Americans often use "arts and crafts" to mean "handicrafts", but those who know art have no other term for "Arts and Crafts", the movement, but may be intending to refer to it, there is no solution but to leave arts and crafts and arts & crafts as redirects to the disambiguation page, so that DabSolver bot makes them be more explicit in their intended link. — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ɖ⊝כ⊙þ Contrib. 02:26, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

editI added sources, as requested. Article still needs more. Kim9988 (talk) 18:21, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

Potential New Information
editHello all,
I am editing DIY Ethic and I noticed that some of the information may be better suited on this page than the other. Here is the link to the sandbox with the information that I plan on removing from the original article. I think it has great potential to be used and don't want it to be lost. Lostxxjustina (talk) 16:47, 4 March 2019 (UTC)
- Nice catch! Since you're already working on it and you have a better understanding of what's getting removed from that article, perhaps you could be the one to add that content to this article? Ibadibam (talk) 04:51, 5 March 2019 (UTC)
