Talk:Harker School

This entry reads more like a PR brochure than an encyclopedia entry: "Eighth graders get an extra free dress day every month." Why is the most important set of facts about the school the location of the four campuses? (I came here to find out something about Harker.) Finally, why can't people spell Thomas Friedman (a man of peace, not a former slave)? 50.0.36.225 (talk) 00:23, 21 January 2014 (UTC)50.0.36.225 (talk) 00:26, 21 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Why is the name of the student body president being taken out of this? The position is integral to the school. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.6.169.115 (talkcontribs) 23:36, 18 May 2006.
The main reason is because he's not the entire school's student body president (for K-12), which is what the article is about (not just the Upper School). Rob.daemon 03:47, 19 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

For Vandal on Quest Against Harker

edit

Whoever is changing the article, please stop. Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, not a place for defamation or repeated vandalism. Yes, we practise NPOV. No, NPOV does not mean who criticise an institution for its "overall dourness." Adding false information does not help either. Really. It doesn't. Please drop it. Thank you. - Jjjsixsix (talk)/(contribs) 00:43, 12 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Suggestion. Shut the **** up.
Be quiet, no one is vandalising an article. The person who is doing this is submitting his own personal opinions about the institution. If you have a problem with it, keep changing it or whine to a moderator. No one is going to stop doing this, so if it means that much to you, you can keep changing it, Jjjsixsix. Deal with it. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.109.241.211 (talkcontribs) 05:11, 17 January 2006.
Right. Personal opinions belong in an encyclopaedia? Don't think so. -- Jjjsixsix (talk)/(contribs) 17:43, 17 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Why pay so much money to go to such horrible campus if you have such a nice top class school FOR FREE in Los Gatos? The campus stinks and the facilities are not impressive at all... fell sorry for the folks going there... my friend went once and could not wait to get out!!! She was lucky her family moved somewhere else... For those with no other option but stay there, I am really sorry... :([User: your best friend ]) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.198.201.24 (talk) 04:38, 31 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:HarkerSchoolLogo.gif

edit

Image:HarkerSchoolLogo.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 23:56, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Names

edit

Are specific names of teachers and students okay?

Ansh666 (talk) 06:36, 11 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

It is publicly available for anyone to see, so why not. [1] Roflcopter666 (talk) 03:51, 21 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Not unless they pass Wikipedia BLP criteria for being independently notable. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 05:37, 26 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Updating Tuition

edit

Removing most of the "estimated" text in the tuition area of this page seems like it'd leave it pretty empty. Since Tuition is listed clearly at the top, I would say it isn't necessary.

--Ngmcs8203 (talk) 23:42, 20 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

A previous edit removed tuition figures, although I think they're within scope of WikiProject:Schools. They'd have to be updated, of course. Ottoump (talk) 00:52, 21 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

edit

An image used in this article, File:Harker.jpg, has been nominated for speedy deletion for the following reason: All Wikipedia files with unknown copyright status

What should I do?

Don't panic; you should have time to contest the deletion (although please review deletion guidelines before doing so). The best way to contest this form of deletion is by posting on the image talk page.

  • If the image is non-free then you may need to provide a fair use rationale
  • If the image isn't freely licensed and there is no fair use rationale, then it cannot be uploaded or used.
  • If the image has already been deleted you may want to try Deletion Review

To take part in any discussion, or to review a more detailed deletion rationale please visit the relevant image page (File:Harker.jpg)

Unsupported Statement

edit

A statement like this, without references isn't necessary.

"Harker students are selected typically based on their academic aptitude."

Ngmcs8203 (talk) 00:12, 20 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wikibabe101 Made a change back to this statement and sited the Academics page of the website as a source. I'm not seeing where on that page it states that harker students are typically selected on their academic aptitude. It'd be awesome if folks used the talk pages more... :\ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ngmcs8203 (talkcontribs) 20:14, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Promotional

edit

Since its creation in 2004 this article has taken a distinctly promotional flavour and is awash with a link farm of deadlinks, primary sources, and other purely promotional websites masquerading as references. For more information, please see WP:WPSCH/AG before adding any content. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 15:53, 10 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Still blatantly promotional. Sem i protected for a while. make edit requersts here or ask at WT:WPSCH for help after thoroghly reviewing WP:WPSCH/AG. Thanks. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 03:32, 9 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Many Harker students are involved in research, which is also shared annually at the Harker Research Symposium. Change to: Many Harker students are involved in research, which is shared annually at science competitions and at the Harker Research Symposium. Under Academics, "In the 2012 competition, Harker had six regional semifinalists and four regional finalists." Please add In 2013, Harker had 10 semifinalists and two regional finalists, and the two finalists were also national winners. In the 2014 competition, Harker had 13 semifinalists and four regional finalists, more than any other California school in both categories. To update the results for subsequent years. Data is available at: http://news.harker.org/harker-produces-2-regional-finalists-10-semifinalists-in-2013-siemens-competition/ and http://news.harker.org/siemens-competition-semi-and-regional-finalists-named-harker-has-most-in-state/ Ddxd76 (talk) 01:50, 31 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Academics Expansion

edit

I feel that adding a section about the academic requirements and/or the courses offered will be substantial to the article. Academic information can be found at http://www.harker.org/upper-school/academics. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Armageddon Entropy (talkcontribs) 05:08, 8 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Avoid promotionalism

edit

Over the years, this article has evolved into what is almost a blatant exercise in promotion and unsourced content. Such an illustrious school does not need to use Wikipedia as a platform to boast about its achievements and should demonstrate its high standards by respecting Wikipedia guidelines. The article has now been edit protected. Please bear this in mind before making any edit requests. See my comments above from 4 ad 5 years ago already. For further information please see WP:WPSCH/AG. History of the school

edit

The Harker School history section needs further development; including information about the multiple campus moves. Joojay (talk) 18:37, 10 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

I added a history section today to this article, it's not very detailed so please feel free to add to it (with RS citations of course). Joojay (talk) 20:45, 10 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Classism

edit

I'm curious what is meant by explicitly describing Harker School as "upper class" in the first sentence. Seems quite a subjective label which is at best irrelevant and at worst exclusionary. As far as I can see, no other private school in California, or in the rest of the country for that matter, is labeled as such. The parents of Harker students are not dukes and lords - they are for the most party upper middle class professionals. Rorymacqueen (talk) 17:25, 16 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
