Sufi?

edit

When reading the source provided about Aweys being a sufi one finds that the article has nothing to do with Aweys but rather Sheikh Sharif. Al-ittihad is THE Salafi/Wahhabi group in Somali and with Aweys playing an important role within the group one can put two and two together. Saying Aweys is a sufi should be deleted. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.18.210.2 (talk) 13:37, 2 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

From his beard he looks like more a sufi. But the source given is just foolish. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.171.252.6 (talk) 17:02, 17 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Move

edit

This page has recently been moved from Hassan Dahir Aweys to Hassan Aweys. The edit summary says "moved Hassan Dahir Aweys to Hassan Aweys: Better title and easy to remember." I disagree - we should title the article according to what his name actually is, as accurately as possible. The article cites nine different articles from six different news sources, and every single one refers to him as Hassan Dahir Aweys. I don't know how Somali names work, or how or whether Somali names refer to the clan and sub-clan system, and none of our Somali articles help. If anyone else does, can they leave a comment? In the absence of such knowledge, it should be moved back. Although Wikipedia:Naming conventions#People does say that Forename Surname is a good format for reasons of readability, I think that as an encyclopedia common sense suggests that the most accurate name is the least problematic. --HughCharlesParker (talk - contribs) 17:11, 3 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Age 61 or 71?

edit

I saw a discrepency between the ages of 61 in a BBC article, and age 71 quoted in a NYT article. However, I could not get to the NYT article to see what they said of his age. Does anyone else have any sources for his age? --Petercorless 01:07, 9 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Misleading first section

edit

The second para of the first section seems to confuse the views of the two ICU leaders, Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Hassan Dahir Aweys. A quick reading of the reference material makes it clear it is Sheikh Ahmed who is talking about his Sufi background rather than Dahir Aweys, as the sentence implies. The two men are very different ideologically and I doubt that Aweys would have made comments like these. Also further down in the section on the Islamic Courts Union, it's not accurate to say that Dahir Aweys 'replaced' Sheikh Ahmed as head of the shura comittee. Up until that point(according to numerous news stories at the timein Shabelle.net and elsewhere) there had been no shura committee, only a committee of the heads of the 12 (or so) Islamic Courts, of which Sheikh Ahmed was the chairman. Rather, the ICU re-organised itself into two branches -- one the shura, the other the executive committee -- and Dahir Aweys and Sheikh Ahmed were in charge of each respectively (it's debatable which had the most influence). I leave those who know how to make any adjustments.Maghreb 07:43, 19 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
