[edit]This is considerably "original research" so I'm not posting it in the main article but does anyone else see a striking resemblence between the story of Ben-Hadad (Hadadezer) and Hazael and the story of Macbeth? Is it possible this is where The Bard got his inspiration for one of the greatest tragedies ever written? KRugg 02:21, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, I noticed the same thing, that's why I came to this page! It appears that there are a few academic references; I've ordered one, I'll add a bit in if it seems appropriate. Walkerma (talk) 13:30, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
Request for clarity in this sentence please
[edit]From the article:
"Hazael is first referred to by name in 1 Kings 19:15 when God told the prophet Elijah to anoint him king over Syria. "
Does the 'him' in this sentence refer to Hazael or to Elijah? I am being bold and changing 'him' to 'Hazael'. If I'm wrong, please revert. 188.220.45.209 (talk) 09:59, 6 June 2012 (UTC)
The he in the name.
[edit]The he is silent because it's unmarked, @Zhomron. This is what's known as a Qere and Ketiv. GordonGlottal (talk) 00:45, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
- @GordonGlottal: No critical manuscript I can get my hands on marks Haza[h]el with a Qere/Ktiv (even within the chapters they are present in, there are plenty of other words marked with qere/ktiv. Never Hazael). For that matter, no Hebrew word I have ever seen has a medial he they mark as unspoken, let alone qere. What exactly are you basing this assertion on? Zhomron (talk) 00:53, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
- The Masoretes' normal way of marking a silent א or ה which is still there in spelling is to ignore it in vocalization/diacritics. The best way of telling in a standard edition is to pay attention to when the vowels match up with the consonants. Here, the word as constructed would plainly be unpronounceable/doesn't follow the rules, which is to say the vowels clearly imply that the he is not pronounced -- a he closing a qamatz in the middle of a word like that would need a schwa, like in יהצה (the only example I can think of). You could also look at the Masoretic notes. In general a normal edition won't explicitly announce such a minor change. GordonGlottal (talk) 01:00, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
- @GordonGlottal: I've only just realized what a colossal fool I have been here, of course that's a silent he. I was picturing the word like it was English, Hazahel, without even trying to actually say it in Hebrew where pronouncing that he would literally be impossible. Why does this page claim a Hadadezer was mentioned in the Tel Dan Stele?
[edit]The only Hadad mentioned in that Stele is the god, no "ezer". KuudereHime 05:24, 15 April 2026 (UTC)
- See , Hazael refers to a father, presumed to be Hadadezer Andre🚐 07:07, 15 April 2026 (UTC)
- But the name of Hadaezer isn't used. If by Father he means the previous King of Damascus that's Benhadad not Hadadezer. KuudereHime 08:29, 16 April 2026 (UTC)
- The name Hadadezer is attested in a different Assyrian inscription. Then people identify that as the same person as Benhadad. See p.165 of which is the source cited in this article. More of something that can be made clearer than a mistake. Andre🚐 17:24, 16 April 2026 (UTC)
- Speculation shouldn't be presented as fact. The Hadadezer at the battle of Qargar is not called a King of Damascus, base don using that name and being a close ally of Hamath he makes more sense as a King of Zobah. KuudereHime 19:19, 16 April 2026 (UTC)
- If it's well-sourced to academic experts it may be included. If there is some disagreement among experts, we may attribute and balance. Speculation by academic experts is different from speculation by editors. The text could be clarified to explain the presumptive identification better, but your own logic and speculation needs a source and is not a rationale to change it unless an expert says the same thing. Palestine v Samaria in lead section
[edit]@IrisChronomia and Zackmann08: my restoration of the link to historical Palestine (region) in the lead section has been undone in apparent good faith in this edit. Please check the source cited, which explicitly uses the term "Palestine", and not "Samaria". Thanks, ~2026-43728-44 (talk) 12:21, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
- i see, will be checking. thanks for noticing. 海盐沙冰 / aka irisChronomia / Talk / Uploads 12:35, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
- Why are you pinging me? Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 23:23, 27 August 2026 (UTC)
- Zackmann08, pinged you because per the diff above, IrisChronomia has reverted back to your version, which uses the term "Samaria", for which I can't find support in the source cited, nor any of the online sources cited in the article. ~2026-46945-83 (talk) 04:38, 28 August 2026 (UTC)
- My edit, from over 2 months ago, has nothing to do with the content. If you look at the diffs of my edit, they are purely technical. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 04:40, 28 August 2026 (UTC)
- Agreed, and I wasn't trying to accuse you of an error or of bad faith editing, but merely pointing out the good faith but erroneous revert to your last version. May I ask you to check the source cited in the lead section? This is a simple matter of WP:V. Thanks, ~2026-46945-83 (talk) 04:51, 28 August 2026 (UTC)
- I didn't go ahead and revert it further mainly because the options get me stunned, namely that the diff "historical Palestine" vs. "Israel-Samaria" looks like a very hot topic to me.
- I have started a thread on reference desk/humanities asking for others to help, but um... 海盐沙冰 / aka irisChronomia / Talk / Uploads 13:06, 28 August 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks, it would be better to get a solid consensus from editors with expertise in the subject, to avoid future edit-warring. I reverted while patrolling recent changes, on the basis of a simple WP:V, but your idea sounds better. ~2026-46945-83 (talk) 14:26, 28 August 2026 (UTC)
- Given the link to Kingdom of Israel (Samaria), I wonder if "Israel-Samaria" is intended to be comparable to "Congo-Brazzaville", regardless of the Israel/Palestinians conflict. The Kingdom of Israel was a substantial part of Palestine, but whether he conquered large parts of Israel (i.e. long-term control) or merely made large campaigns through it isn't really clear from the Bible, and I don't know other sources.
