Recent issue in Health and Medical education scholarships in Saudi Arabia

Our society and the Government of The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have been seeking well-trained physicians. The Government and Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) has spent considerable amount of funds on scholarships in order to send Saudi students for training abroad. After I finished reading the 8th habit, I learned the concept of finding my voice, and inspiring others to find theirs as well. Employing “Quality physicians” is the organization's and stakeholder’s main goal. The ministry is trying its best to educate Saudis but lacks a strategy and correct planning. Developing and implementing a strategy needs experience, and I gained experience by coming to the United States and getting exposed to its academic systems. After arriving to the United States, I found out that the academic system in North America is extremely different than other countries. Students that have an interest in Medicine/dentistry/pharmacy usually have an undergrad background in pre- medical/dental/pharmacy with a science degree. Additionally each student must pass an admission standardized test after their undergraduate degree graduation, and based on whether or not they meet the required score for their school of interest; then they must complete the schools application process. In my personal opinion, I am certain that the admission committees for these various schools do not favor foreign students, which is understandable, especially if the results of the foreign students are equal or of lesser value to those students born in the states.

Earlier on in November 2007, the Saudi ministry of higher education has made the announcement to send 623 students overseas to get bachelor degrees in Medicine and Dentistry. There is no way that all of these 623 students will get accepted into medical and dental schools abroad, and a big percentage of them might go back. What a waste of money! I found myself in the same situation where I thought I couldn’t help. Other experienced people might already be aware of the situation. I am also inspired to try to find a solution for these 623 students. I suggest making deals with universities and affiliations to accept a Saudi student if they met the requirements. I suggested minimizing the number of scholarships, and having a smaller amount of students who would be sent annually in order to get a higher success rate. I would also be honored to contribute to the cultural mission in the United States by writing up formal letters to universities and visiting schools if the mission was willing and able to support me. I have received plenty of messages up to date. I also have a lot of supporters on the issue. My voice will be heard in Saudi Arabia InshAllah.

The ministry of higher education should be effective and should take the lead in solving some of Saudi Arabia’s society’s most pressing problems and needs. Hopefully my plan will help promote the sustainability of the organization (MOHE) and move the society (Saudi Arabia) as a whole into an era of wisdom. I am sure that there are well-educated negotiators and older officials, but there has never been an initiative to do such a thing. I would love to see the organization that embraced me boom and prosper. I hope that I could contribute to the organization (MOHE), and to my society.

My plan hopefully will help enhance the sustainability of the organization (MOHE) and move the society (Saudi Arabia) as a whole into an era of wisdom that has never been feasible. I am sure that there are well-educated negotiators and older officials, but there has never been an initiative to do such a thing. I would love to see the organization that embraced me boom and prosper. I hope it would be something that I could contribute to the organization (MOHE), and to my society.

In the U.S. there are no bachelor degrees in medicine or dentistry, only doctrates. The number of places in American medical schools are limited. Perhaps only 1/2 of qualified students are accepted. Hence many Americans leave the U.S to attend medical schools in other countires with the hope they will later be accepted for postgraduate medical training in the U.S. So, it is very unlikely that foreign students will be accepted into American medical schools. On the other hand, post graduate training positions for residencies and fellowships go unfilled. Hence many foreign medical graduates are accepted into these.
