The Fortress Today

edit

The last line of this section says: 'The wandering prize is the casing of a shell fired at the fortress in 1940.' Should this read 'winning'? Orenburg1 (talk) 17:44, 5 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

No, it's meant to be trophy, not prize. A trophy that you win, hold for a year, and then have to compete for again. Not too sure how to put that. Manxruler (talk) 18:04, 5 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Like the Claret Jug, basically. Manxruler (talk) 18:08, 5 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
The correct word is "travelling trophy", I believe. Manxruler (talk) 18:10, 5 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
I think it should read 'The winners trophy, awarded annually, is the casing of a shell fired at the fortress in 1940.' Orenburg1 (talk) 18:14, 5 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
I dont think that 'travelling trophy' is a phrase commonly used in English. Orenburg1 (talk) 18:45, 5 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
I think it is. Google gives 10,300 results Manxruler (talk) 18:50, 5 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
And another 184,000 results for the US English version "traveling trophy". Manxruler (talk) 18:54, 5 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
And traveling trophy is a redirect to trophy. Manxruler (talk) 18:56, 5 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
Well that is not many google results when 'trophy' on its own gives over 98 million hits. The Wikipedia article to which 'traveling trophy' redirects does not mention 'travelling' in relation to any of the annually awarded trophies. Orenburg1 (talk) 19:10, 5 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
I still fail to see the basis on which your statement is founded. Please explain your views, beyond that you "dont think that 'travelling trophy' is a phrase commonly used in English". Manxruler (talk) 19:21, 5 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
I guess my point is that the phrase is not common usage in English (googling 'annual trophy' or 'trophy awarded annually' gives 18/20 million hits v. 184k for 'traveling trophy') and that searching for 'traveling trophy' on WP redirects to 'trophy' which does not explain the meaning so a casual reader coming across the phrase and wondering what it means will get no help - but I dont really care that much so leave it as it is. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Orenburg1 (talkcontribs) 18:28, 9 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
