Istanbul / Chicago

• Wien darf nicht Istanbul werden, also Wien darf nicht Chicago werden (Vienna must not become Istanbul/Chicago).

This might need some explanation for those who do not live in Austria. In this slogan, Istanbul stands for immigration (a large percentage of "foreigners" in Vienna come from Turkey).

This phrase was an allusion to an earlier one which was used by the Haider-FPÖ: "Vienna must not become Chicago." Here, surprisingly, Chicago stands for a high crime rate, as the average Austrian still imagines Chicago as a city full of dark corners and shootings in the streets (probably all in black and white).

If I'm not mistaken, back when the "Chicago" slogan was used in an election campaign Chicago politicians actually invited some of their colleagues from Vienna to come over and see for themselves how the city has changed since the days of their grandparents.

Anyway, I don't think Chicago was mentioned in last year's election campaign, so I believe it should be removed from the article. <KF> 20:27, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

As above, this doesn't work so well for non-Austrians either. It's intentionally written incorrectly to imitate a stereotypical turkish accent, this being a kind of favourite joke of many Austrians, mostly children (many of which are often not even aware of the racist undertone). I've put it in quotation marks to make this clearer but I'm still not quite pleased with the outcome. PURPLEFISH 12:30, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Per the wikipedia article on Crime in Chicago, "Chicago was named "America's mass shooting capital", citing 18 occasions in 2015 in which 4 or more people were shot in a single incident" and murder rates just keep escalating year after year. Perhaps the reasons why Austrians would not want to live like Chicagoans do should be explained in the article. XavierItzm (talk) 18:48, 21 May 2016 (UTC)

Hässlicher Österreicher

I also live in Austria and speak german fluently. DasSchORscH was right, it does mean "I'm an ugly Austrian! You too!". It is very likely that somebody did that, because of political reasons. I never heard this "slogan" before. It seems made up. No citation and no source and no year is listed. I think this is a bogus entry by a wikipedian poster who wanted to have fun. 80.121.43.17 (talk) 19:19, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

Vandalism?

There seems to be some recent vandalism here, see this edit, in particular the second image uploaded then. Why was it accepted as the author's "own work" in the first place? <KF> 11:08, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

What happened to the info on HC Strache's photos?

The following info has been deleted from the article:

Stills taken from a video shot in the late 1980s were published in January 2007 showing a uniformed Strache allegedly participating in paramilitary training activities. Other people on the pictures were claimed to be known neo-Nazis. Strache has denied the allegations, claiming the pictures are of him playing paintball as an 18-year old. In his initial reaction, Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer referred to the incident as a "folly of youth" (Jugendtorheit).

At the end of January, further pictures were published, allegedly showing Strache performing a Nazi salute (the Kühnen salute). Strache denied the allegations prior to publication of the pictures. After publication, Strache argued that the picture showed him ordering three beers and was not a Nazi salute. Austrian Jewish community leaders criticized the government for its lack of response.

Seeing as this was big news in Austria, and Strache is always being accused of far-right connections (whether fairly or not), it seems strange that this was removed. Was there a good reason for this? After all, it's hardly libelous to report that newspapers published pictures and that there was controversy - and I can't think of any other reason to remove it.

The article information about the apparently neo-Nazi photos was removed by an IP here [2], back in 2013. Looking at the article history it seems the material was sometimes in and sometimes out of the article since 2007. I've restored the material to the article into what seem like chronologically reasonable places. If there's contention on the issue we can have a longer discussion, hold an RfC, or go to WP:BLPN for advice. -Darouet (talk) 21:39, 17 May 2019 (UTC)

Picture 2012 about the cartoon

The article mentions the cartoon depicting a fat bank man. There is a link to the BBC, but this link does NOT show the cartoon.
