Helder (disambiguation)Helder – The municipality and a city in the Netherlands is Den Helder not Helder. 93.185.30.108 (talk) 16:52, 6 May 2017 (UTC)--Relisting. Primefac (talk) 14:52, 18 May 2017 (UTC)Reply

What's the etymology of this name? The clear, bright, transparent, clear, lucid, and obvious? It's not clear, bright, transparent, clear, lucid, and obvious to me. wbm1058 (talk) 15:58, 7 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Hmm, nl:Den Helder#Etymologie. No corresponding section in English. Maybe Bright as in Lighthouse (how it's seen by incoming ships)? wbm1058 (talk) 16:06, 7 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • I'm leaning to support, as the only three links to Helder I found should have been linked to the more specific Helder Expedition. wbm1058 (talk) 16:15, 7 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • Etymology is not important; "Den Helder" is a proper name, doesn't matter whether or not it means anything. Nowadays, the name is always cited as the complete combination, never as the separate word "Helder". Even before 1928, when the place was officially called "Helder", people referred to it as "De Helder", in which "De" is modern Dutch for the outdated "Den". But if you're interested: "Helder" in "Den Helder" has nothing to do with bright or clear, but most probably with slope or slipway, which is called "helling" in Dutch.  Wikiklaas  21:58, 18 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Right, nl:Helder is ambiguous in the native language. So is nl:Haag. I suppose we would never call it simply, "Hague" if the word was "Forest". This doesn't seem like a controversial move at all. wbm1058 (talk) 13:02, 3 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
