Extensive editing to page by the subject of the page

edit

I have noticed that a user @H-minus: (see Special:Contributions/H-minus and User_talk:H-minus) has made numerous edits to the page, claiming to be Helen Oyeyemi herself. Unfortunately almost all these edits are the reversal of previous changes including changes which added useful information, including images from Wikicommons. While it is great that Helen is engaging with her own page and correcting inaccuracies, she has an obvious conflict of interest and should not be editing her own page. I recommend that she reads WP:COIEDIT to see how she can request alterations to her page, or uses the talk page to point out errors. FlyingFoxBoi (talk) 09:01, 2 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

whilst appreciative of the user @FlyingFoxBoi’s concern and recommended reading, it’s difficult to see how inaccuracies, photographs that are over a decade old &c. are relevant or useful contributions to a page purporting to be a condensed source of information regarding a living writer. the ‘talk’ page is useful for notes like this, but the efficacy of ‘correcting’ the primary page by commenting on it here is dubious too. H-minus (talk) 09:45, 2 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
I agree that inaccurate information must be removed and old photos should be updated with newer ones if available. Correcting the page via posting a note on the talk page and waiting for an editor without COI to make the change will be frustrating but it is the only way we can proceed. I will do what I can to respond to your concerns promptly. Unfortunately if an old photo is all that is available then I believe that it still should be used as images improve Wikipedia pages immensely. FlyingFoxBoi (talk) 10:01, 2 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
@H-minus: Please stop directly editing the page and explain the changes you wish to be made. If you have a conflict of interest you can not directly edit the article in this way. BrokenSegue 21:53, 30 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
with appreciation for your contributions to wikipedia, i’m neither adding to the page nor accepting your direct edits. (it is also demonstrably not a fact that the information that you insist on adding is present in entries for every author.) H-minus (talk) 21:56, 30 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
you are editing the page @H-minus: and removing content that appears valid. it isn't your position here to "accept" edits. BrokenSegue 22:06, 30 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
the post doesn’t pertain to your professional life. and it isn’t your position to decide what’s valid in that context. H-minus (talk) 22:08, 30 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@H-minus: I'm afraid the subjects of articles on Wikipedia do not have veto power over its contents. Maybe if you explained why the material should be excluded it would be. BrokenSegue 22:11, 30 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
i already made a note on that when undoing the revision. you’ve made your report on the administrator’s noticeboard and thereby signalled how crucial you think/feel it is to be able to construct someone else’s biography, so the power is all yours, i’m sure. H-minus (talk) 22:14, 30 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@H-minus: I have zero interest in this biography. I do have an interest in enforcing rules and keeping someone from deleting information. Could you at least write a paragraph saying what info you want removed and why it should be excluded? The place of birth of someone is common information in an encyclopedia. BrokenSegue 22:18, 30 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
could you please just leave the page as it is? as stated previously, i wish this page didn’t exist. all the information necessary re: an unimportant fiction writer is already there, and i hate having to have this on watchlist and getting updates every time information that i do not see on pages for other writers is presented as essential information relating to what i write. H-minus (talk) 22:26, 30 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@H-minus: I mean I don't know who you are but having several works that have their own pages is probably enough to be notable for Wikipedia unfortunately. But you could attempt to get the page deleted. See: Wikipedia:Guide to deletion and perhaps Wikipedia:BLP courtesy deletion. Given that it does continue to exist Wikipedia's policies do not and should not give the subject full veto power over its contents. I'm sure you can see why that is.
