editWhy does the surname Hendry get mentioned under both clans MacNaughton and Clan Henderson? How might one find out how/why/when that 'split' occurred in the clanship? - Glen Hendry
Many surnames are associated with multiple clans and often multiple nationalities. Hendry may be of either Scottish or Irish origin.
Clan MacNaughton claims Pictish King Nechtan mac Derile as its founder, while Clan Henderson claims Nechtan's son Prince Henry (Eanruig Mor mac Righ Nechtan) as its founder. As such, Clan MacNaughton clams the MacKenricks, Hendersons, and Hendrys as a sept (Clan MacNaughton at Electric Scotland). Clan Henderson maintains its independent status as a full clan as confirmed by Lord Lyon King of Arms (Origins of Clan Henderson). Clan Donald claims both the MacNaughtons and the Hendersons as septs.
The actual historical association of a surname requires some genealogical research. As in times past, clan affiliation may ultimately come down to a personal choice. - Buaidh 14:32, 9 January 2007 (UTC) - clann Eanruig (Clan Henderson)
