On doing some more research, it looks like this is a little more complicated. I initially thought that the occasional usage of de Man must be erroneous (given the upper-class pretentions of the same de) but it does look like it is correct. The entry in the Biographie nationale unambiguously lists him as de Man, though it notes that his entry in the état civil (presumably his birth certificate) is as Deman. I have no idea what the logic behind it is, but given that the Biographie nationale is clearly a WP:RS, we should use the form they give. —Brigade Piron (talk) 15:37, 6 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
