Review
edit- Add a "This article is written in American English" template to the talk page. -- Done! -- West Virginian (talk) 10:39, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- "1890–1893" in the infobox should be written as "1890–93" because it's the same century (see MOS:DATEFORMAT). -- Done! -- West Virginian (talk) 10:39, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- "1883–1885" - MOS:DATEFORMAT. -- Done! -- West Virginian (talk) 10:39, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- "1909–1911" - MOS:DATEFORMAT. -- Done! -- West Virginian (talk) 10:39, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- "1887–1888" - MOS:DATEFORMAT. -- Done! -- West Virginian (talk) 10:39, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- "1877–1879" - MOS:DATEFORMAT. -- Done! -- West Virginian (talk) 10:39, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- "1877–1879" - MOS:DATEFORMAT. -- Done! Please let me know if you see any other dates that I missed. -- West Virginian (talk) 10:39, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- " His father was a prominent dry goods merchant in Romney, where Gilkeson and his brother, Edward M. Gilkeson, were raised" - To avoid confusion regarding the surnames, I suggest tweaking this sentence into " His father was a prominent dry goods merchant in Romney, where Henry and his brother, Edward, were raised". When referring to more then one person of the same surname, use their first names, a lot of people does this, but of course only in sentences where more people of the same surname is mentioned. This is just a suggestion. -- Good call! I've modified the sentence to read as such. -- West Virginian (talk) 10:46, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- "Gilkeson completed a special course in engineering at Yale University" - What year? -- The source unfortunately did not specify, so I forced to leave this intentionally vague. Let me know if this is a deal breaker. -- West Virginian (talk) 10:46, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- "He also received further education in Germany" - extremely vague, and triggers a lot of questions. I recommend adding a few more details. If no other details is known, this is just fine, but do check. Might be something here or here. :) -- Good call and thank you for the suggestion! As is the case with several of the other lingering questions with this article, I have been unable to find other substantiating data to explain what sort of education Gilkeson received in Germany. I will continue to dig, although I have not yet been able to find this information. Hopefully this isn't a deal breaker for the time being. -- West Virginian (talk) 10:56, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- "upon Gilkeson's return to Romney, his recommendation of Hill, and his resignation, Hill was appointed by the Board to fill his position" - Sentence does not flow when you say it out loud. Try something like "upon Gilkeson's return to Romney, his recommendation of Hill, as well as his own resignation, made Hill principal". In any case, tweak it. -- Done! Let me know what you think of the current version! -- West Virginian (talk) 10:52, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- "for the 1883–1885, and 1909–1911" - MOS:DATEFORMAT might only apply to infoboxes and not main space article. If you know for sure it doesn't, just ignore this point. -- Done! -- West Virginian (talk) 10:50, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- "Gilkeson was appointed to the Committees on the Judiciary; Public Buildings and Humane Institutions; Federal Relations; Forfeited, Delinquent, and Unappropriated Lands; and Clerks Office" - A minor detail, but I would replace all the ";" with ",". -- Done! -- West Virginian (talk) 10:50, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- "Gilkeson also served as the mayor of Romney, West Virginia beginning in 1885" - Mention what year he ended his office as mayor. -- Unfortunately there are no records that seem to specify when his mayorship was completed, so I was forced to be vague on this account. I will continue to dig to see if I can find an end date, but it may be to no avail. -- West Virginian (talk) 10:50, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- No need to add a reference to both the quotebox and the sentence leading up to the quotebox; one in either is fine. -- Done! I've removed the citation from the quote box. -- West Virginian (talk) 10:46, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
- Move the section "Marriage and family" to the bottom of the article. As in, the last section. -- Done! -- West Virginian (talk) 10:46, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
