Deletion discussion
edit- I would support the speedy deletion of this article. Though I could probably prove the notability of W. H. L. Poe, it would take some work... and this current article is incredibly inaccurate and poorly written. --Midnightdreary (talk) 01:11, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
- Addendum: In regards to the above comment by the article's creator... I haven't seen any copyright concerns. That's not what we're talking about. --Midnightdreary (talk) 01:13, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
- I've cleaned this up a bit but am not knowledgeable on the topic. There do seem to be sufficient sources though to establish the notability of this person, and hopefully it will survive the deletion debate.--Bigtimepeace | talk | contribs 07:32, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
Their was a copywright problem at first, but I fixed that...besides this was my first page. In the future there will be better starts for the pages. Thank everyone for their participation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Corpus1 (talk • contribs) 20:44, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
Photo?
editUmm... a request for a photo has been issued from WP:BIOGRAPHY. As far as I know, there are no known images of William Henry Leonard Poe. I guess I could draw one right now but I can't imagine how accurate it would be. I may remove the request in a few days as it seems odd. Thoughts? --Midnightdreary (talk) 21:20, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
- Then the article needs to include this fact.--Cazo3788 (talk) 21:28, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
- You'll have to show me the policy that says that. As I understood it, images are not a requirement in articles. Additionally, I'd have to do some serious searching to find a source that makes the obvious statement that no images of WHL exist, then find a logical place to put it so that it doesn't disrupt the flow of text. --Midnightdreary (talk) 21:34, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
- I have to agree that this is a strange request. The earliest Daguerreotype seems to have been around 1837, 6 years after WHL Poe died (interestingly we have a daguerreotype of Edgar displayed on that article). I don't understand why we need to explain there is no photograph for someone who was not alive when early photography was perfected (apparently the first photo was 1826, but it took eight hours to do and the technique needed improvement). WHL Poe died young and was not prominent or wealthy so it's very unlikely there are any surviving portraits of him either. The article has a couple of images which is probably just about the best we can do. I can't think of a good way to say "by the way there's no pictures of this guy" in the article and I don't know that we can even prove that definitively (maybe there's a rough sketch of him somewhere, who knows). I don't see a problem removing this request and I would hope that the lack of a photo or portrait does not effect the GA review of this article. It's rare that we'll have images of not-so-prominent people who died before the mid-19th century and there's really nothing we can do about that.--Bigtimepeace | talk | contribs 19:53, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

- For what it's worth: this says "No portrait of him is known". Biruitorul Talk 16:33, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
GA Review

Hello. I'll be doing the Good Article review for this article. It looks really good and is very close to passing. Here are some very minor suggestions for improvement:
- "The children were likely at Eliza's side as she died. Henry described her "long... last farewell" to them and was given a lock of her hair to remember her." - is the second sentence here supposed to help prove the first? If so, I'd try combining the sentences. For example, "The children were likely at Eliza's side as she died, as Henry described her "long... last farewell" to them and was given a lock of her hair to remember her." Otherwise, the first sentence will need a ref of its own, as the wording make it seem speculative.
- I think a mention of the similarity between the brothers' writings might be a good addition to the lead.
- Further reading should be below the references.
Not much to change. I also saw a few places that needed a little copyediting, but I'll fix that when everything else is taken care of. The article will be on hold for seven days to allow for these improvements. Great work! Nikki311 20:57, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for taking the time to review this! I guess the second sentence wasn't supposed to "back up" the assertion in the first sentence, but the information in both sentences came from the same source. I added a footnote just to be safe. I also agreed that the brothers' similar writing styles should be in the lede; let me know if you like its placement. Oh, and the "Further reading" section has been moved. Thanks again! Let me know if you seen anything else! --Midnightdreary (talk) 22:23, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
- Great work. I believe the article meets all the GA criteria, so I am going to pass it. Nikki311 22:59, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
