Scoring

edit

Could someone who knows explain the scoring system? It currently says "In each event, the athlete scores points according to the marks achieved" which seems to say they score points by scoring points. What are these marks and how are they achieved? 81.220.8.21 16:39, 26 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree as this will help to understand, when training, how much emphasis be placed on the athletes strengths and weaknesses. Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.17.196.85 (talk) 18:09, August 26, 2007 (UTC)

There's a similar need to explain the scoring concept in Decathlon. The IAAF document in the links givs good insight. esp page 18. Matt Whyndham (talk) 13:40, 15 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

How is Tessa Sanderson credited with the javelin's HB when the comparison is to the new model's WR introduced in 1999, after her retirement? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.180.38.41 (talk) 13:13, 30 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Clarification

edit

Does one girl perform all seven events or is it a team of girls? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Robinrobin (talkcontribs) 13:06, 3 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

This is a prescribed event following international rules for track and field events as administrated by the IAAF. One person performs all of these events, in order. There is a half an hour break between each event, four events on the first day (100H, HJ, SP, 200) and three on the second (LJ, JT and 800). The men also do their heptathlon indoors in a similar fashion, as they do the outdoor Decathlon. And for the novice, yes, beyond the exertion factor, is the combination of skills. The mere adaptation of the body, to be able to, for example, be in the best shape to throw, works against the ability to say, sprint or run the 800. That is why these are special athletes. Women's Points System

edit

The Benchmark table of values could be revised to address:

a. table listed in the same order as the points calculation variables;
b. all table values in the same units as required for the points calculations (ie. T in seconds, M in cm, and D in m)

Men's Points System

edit

The equivalent Points Calculations variables table of values (a, b, & c) is required for the men's events (similar to the women's above) The Benchmark table of values could be revised to address:

a. table listed in the same order as the points calculation variables;
b. all table values in the same units as required for the points calculations (ie. T in seconds, M in cm, and D in m)

Traditional Ending Bow

edit

Maybe someone else can describe it better, or has more solid information. The heptathlon woman seem to conduct some traditional closing ritual at the end of each competition. After the 800 meters all of the heptathlon competitors stand together on the track, holding flags and bowing to the audience. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.201.160.2 (talk) 20:33, 7 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Chernova in list of women's performances

edit

My edit removing the sub-table listing Tatyana Chernova's performance which was disqualified for doping was reverted without explanation by Montell 74. My rationale for removing is as follows:

  • Chernova's score was disqualified for doping, which means it effectively didn't happen. Chernova didn't score 6880 at the 2011 World Championships, she got a DSQ.
  • Chernova's score was not absolutely exceptional (it would be 11th if included) so it doesn't need particular attention.
  • By including it as a separate box, it gives it a large amount of space and prominence, which is unwarranted as it is not an official record.
  • Including this box gives the initial impression that the bullet points below it are also drug-invalidated scores. This is very undesirable.

I will re-do my removal. Please comment below to discuss this if needed. --LukeSurl t c

National Records

World Athletics limit of 6200 points as there are still many countries missing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A0A:A547:2E5C:0:A883:E6F1:B8D0:9073 (talk) 13:27, 25 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

If we keep the table in the current state, it remains incomplete and misleading. More than 100 national records would be missing.

I didn't remove sources, source [11] contains all records. https://www.worldathletics.org/records/all-time-toplists/combined-events/heptathlon/outdoor/women/senior?regionType=world&windReading=regular&page=1&bestResultsOnly=true&firstDay=1900-01-01&lastDay=2020-12-25

I did update the table, to say it's vandalism is ridiculous by user @Kemilcan

Page organisation: Women before men?

edit

Shouldn't the details of the women's heptathlon and all associated records etc come before the men's event? This page used to list the women's heptathlon first, which makes more sense given that the women's heptathlon is the major Olympic-level outdoor event and the men's heptathlon is a more minor indoor and non-Olympic event. Surely notability counts here, and most general readers who visit the page would be looking for details on the Olympic event? 80.2.173.21 (talk) 23:27, 21 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
