Native range of H. lanatum
editWhat is the native range of Heracleum lanatum? Its synonym (Heracleum lanatum var. asiaticum) and common name (Asian cowparsnip) imply that the species may be native to Asia. Can anyone provide evidence that this claim is true?
This is an important question, I think, since numerous articles (published by American authors) suggest that the range of H. lanatum includes North America. I'm not convinced this is true. I believe that many (most?) of these authors are in fact referring to Heracleum maximum.
AFAIK, the only species of the Heracleum genus found in North America are H. maximum (a native) and H. mantegazzianum (an invasive). (There have been a few reported sightings of H. sphondylium in Canada but these reports are rare and apparently have not been confirmed.[1]) There is much confusion regarding the North American native species H. maximum.

Other Heracleum species
editHi @Kadybird. Besides Heracleum maximum (which I believe is synonymous with Heracleum lanatum), what other Heracleum species are native to North America? Tom Scavo (talk) 15:22, 19 July 2019 (UTC)
