In Spanish language countries, the first surname is the main surname, so Hernando de Escalante Fontaneda should not be quoted as "Fontaneda" but as "Escalante".--213.96.18.161 22:50, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

King Carlos reference

A sentence in the main article reads:

Around 1566 Fontaneda was rescued from his captivity by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, Florida's first Spanish governor and founder of St. Augustine, who bargained for his freedom from King Carlos.

The link to King Carlos has been deleted as G1. Should this be changed here also? Ileanadu (talk) 03:24, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

Actually, this article says that it was a King Juan Carlos of the Calusa who held him captive:

Which raises another issue; there are no citations or references in this article other than to the translation of Hernando de Escalante Fontaneda's own memoir. I read somewhere that his memoirs did not relate who rescued him, and there's some dispute on this issue. Ileanadu (talk) 03:33, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

Personal details

I had a conversation with a reader today, at User talk:31.54.34.170. I had always gathered from what I saw in secondary sources that Escalante Fonteneda gave essentially no details about his personal life in his writings. Having looked at the Buckingham Smith translation, I see he did provide some details about his life. I'm trying to get hold of a secondary source that covers this information.
