I really think that heterotopia in biology should be given a distinct category and with it's own page. Medicine is a very descriptive science and biology is mixed descriptive and theoretical. Personally I think there should be a nobel prize in biology because medicine is somewhat distinct.

If you guys have any objections to the content just let me know. Most of it is my personal summary of West-Eberhard's book as well as stuff i've read in actual professional journals just to fill in the gaps a little.

I've never contributed to wikipedia before. I was just surprised that all that wikipedia had on this dramatic force in mutations and evolution in general was a few sentences. I mean even West-Eberhard devoted(an albeit short) chapter to this in her book.

I'd really appreciate any botanists to add more about this in botany, but I must admit i'm a student of zoology and I really could only track down references to a few things. Given that plants have fewer developmental constraints I would conjecture a guess that heterotopy at a macroscopic level is probably more extensive in plants than animals.

Any other notes on the molecular level would be interesting but that stuff is also kind of out of my field.

The changes that heterotopy cause though are dramatic and really should be given more publicity and exposure to the general public —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.41.31.163 (talk) 03:30, 3 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

The description is muddled. Not all heterotopias = ectopia. And heterotopia can also mean choristoma. [1] All agreed? Hovea 13:02, 28 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Is 'heterotopy' a synonym for 'heterotopia'? 'Heterotopia' isn't listed in the OED, but 'heterotopy' is, and its definition seems to be the same as the one given in this article. Jammycaketin (talk) 11:02, 25 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
