Origin of "hick"
editIsn't this where the term Hick came from? I recall being told that by a fairly reliable source years ago. I could be mistaken... if someone can verify that perhaps it should be referenced. --Gellender 03:11, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
- According to the hick article, the popular etymology holds it is from supporters of Andrew Jackson, who was known as "Old Hickory". The use of suffix "-ville" as slang to denote a particular group or situation, was a later, likely 50s invention, ala "squaresville" or "dullsville". See: [1]--LeflymanTalk 18:36, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
- Originally "Hick" was a slur used against abolitionist Quakers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.252.69.92 (talk) 17:03, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
Origin of the name Hicksville
editI went to school there and I remember learning it was named after an 'Ebenezer' - not 'Elias' Hicks...this is consistent with the fact that Elias never lived in Hicksville... I'll try to find a reliable source to verify... Dlabtot 04:04, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
I believe you will discover that Elias Hicks lived in Jericho and part of the Hicks family property became Hicksville. Numerous entries on the Web will support this. Since Hicks was a Quaker, pacifist and organizer of the Underground Railroad, the real estate men who sold WWII veterans houses in the 1950s may well have downplayed Elias Hicks and the true history of Hicksville. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.43.34.107 (talk) 16:30, August 28, 2007 (UTC)
IKEA trivia?
editThe trivia about IKEA seems random enough, but it also seems to be false, according to the IKEA page: http://www.ikea.com/ms/en_US/about_ikea/facts_figures/ikea_group_stores.html —Preceding unsigned comment added by Spellcheck (talk • contribs) 21:59, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
