Fascinating history
editIs the tourism just on the nearby beaches, or do Dominicans visit Higüey for its historic sites? I tightened up the history section, although the Caribbean is not my expertise, and I really did not understand the last bit at all (it seemed merely a retelling of the different names for the province). I wonder if Higüey had similar stories to one of the last areas of Cuba to be conquered, where a princess supposedly threw herself off a cliff. That said, I would have added a link to the Jaragua Massacre, but it seems in a different region. Does Higüey have non-church buildings from the colonial era? Is this an area of religious devotion because of miracles associated with the image, or did the friars and priests try to protect the remaining native people? Also, FYI, in Spain in the late medieval or early modern era, granting a city a charter and seal meant it achieved a degree of self-governance, from a mayor to militia or police and tax collectors, none of which are mentioned. For all I know, Higüey could be most notable for its peacefulness. The intro says both the cathedral and church of St Denis remain, but I wonder exactly when they were built or rebuilt after the earthquakes that the island's known for. I understand the area might have been used for sugar cane or banana plantations, and that period of actual or near slavery might still be controversial, but I'm sure something happened either in the city or province since Touissant L'Overture. I think readers (some of whom are or might become tourists) would appreciate learning about the city and area. Some citations would also help, as would new wikipedia pages concerning the Taino leaders and other distinguished citizens. Jweaver28 (talk) 19:57, 15 July 2013 (UTC)

- Support per nom. The city is the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, and the Dominican Republic doesn't have specialized naming guidelines in WP:NCGEO that would call for additional detail in the title. ModernDayTrilobite (talk • contribs) 20:38, 9 June 2022 (UTC)
