Old Gaza Strip section
editIn the article, we have this written: "Until the 1990s and the withdrawal of Israel Defense Forces from most of the Gaza Strip due to the Oslo Accords, Highway 4 continued all the way until Rafah and the Egyptian border." My question is - do we have a list of the former interchanges/junctions in the Gaza Strip, complete with names, interchange/junction type, and kilometer markers, and if so what were they? --Daniel Blanchette 02:09, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
Street name links
editIt is fundamentally illogical to link street names to the persons they're named after.
Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Linking#Link specificity says, "Always link to the article on the most specific topic appropriate to the context from which you link" and offers the example of preferring "the flag of Tokelau" to "the flag of Tokelau". By analogy, if there is a link in "Bar-Lev Blvd.", it should be Bar Lev Blvd., not Bar-Lev Blvd.
Wikipedia generally follows this principle of links within names. Alaska mentions Mount McKinley, not Mount McKinley. San Francisco mentions Van Ness Avenue, not Van Ness Avenue. Washington, D.C. mentions Florida Avenue, Pennsylvania Avenue, and Massachusetts Avenue, not Florida Avenue, Pennsylvania Avenue, and Massachusetts Avenue.
Similarly, Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Linking says, "As much as possible, avoid linking from within quotes, which may clutter the quotation, violate the principle of leaving quotations unchanged, and mislead or confuse the reader." I would add that a quotation is a single entity and links within it break up its unity. A quotation should not be broken up by internal wikilinks, and even more strongly, a geographical name should not be broken up by internal wikilinks. —Anomalocaris (talk) 17:10, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
Also, see the discussion at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Linking#Linking inside titles. We don't link within book titles and we shouldn't link within street names. —Anomalocaris (talk) 18:14, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
Also, the Hebrew version of this page does not link within street names. —Anomalocaris (talk) 19:30, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
- Your points are well taken, Anomalocaris. However, strict adherence to 'manuals of style' can sometimes stifle knowledge rather than enhance it. There must be some flexibility for a variety of circumstances. I wish it were as simple as the flag of Tokelau" vs "the flag of Tokelau
- If only we could have an article for every street. We would, unfortunately, soon overwhelm the Wikipedia servers with stubs. Here in Israel, we love to name streets. And when we run out of streets, we just rename segments of streets. Look at Route 417 in Jerusalem. It has no less than 8 different name changes along the way. One named segment is a mere 0.3 km long part of a 15 km road!
- Linking to the person after whom the street is named is, in fact, a relevant specific topic. Look at a sample sign from Jerusalem. The second line gives biographical information about the person. The third line (in parentheses) shows the dates of his birth and death. Just one of thousands of examples of how relevant this information is to us here in Israel.
- As for linking from within quotes or titles, thus breaking up the unity, I leave it to you to suggest a solution to that detail. Perhaps, simply including St. or Blvd. within the link. I hope you will agree that these links should be maintained. Regards, --@Efrat (talk) 20:37, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
- By the way, perhaps the Hebrew version of this page does not link within street names, but some others do. That is for them to decide. --@Efrat (talk) 20:37, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
- Oh, my mistake. The Hebrew version of this page does have a link within a street name, at 164.5 km! --@Efrat (talk) 20:42, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
