possible skeleton
editAccording to this Web site here, there's a nearly complete skeleton of H. antiquus at a Paleontology museum in Rome. I could find no other confirmation that this skeleton in fact exists. If anyone happens to be in Rome and can check this out, it'd be amazing to add the picture to the article. But seeing as this Web site hardly seems authoritative, I'm not flying to Rome just to check it out. --JayHenry 19:34, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

European Hippopotamus → Hippopotamus antiquus — Looking at the usage of the "common name" vrs the binomial shows that Hippopotamus antiquus is the much preferred name to refer to this species. "European hippopotamus" returns ~2,300 google hits and only returns three hits on goggle scholar. Hippopotamus antiquus returns over 90 google scholar hits and over 3,690 google hits. --Kevmin (talk) 03:57, 3 November 2009 (UTC)
- That's fine with me. I had originally put it here because European Hippopotamus was the name I personally was familiar with. But your google results suggest that Hippopotamus aniquus is quite a bit more common. And as long as there's a redirect from European Hippopotamus, I can't see that it could cause any problems. I say go for it! --JayHenry (talk) 04:05, 3 November 2009 (UTC)
- And I was thinking it fit better with the naming scheme of the other hippo articles. --JayHenry (talk) 04:06, 3 November 2009 (UTC)
- Support — In addition to the other reasons already mentioned, using the scientific name avoids such hideous phrasing as this: "the European Hippopotamus was not the only European hippopotamus". The target page name should be Hippopotamus antiquus (epithet lowercase). --Una Smith (talk) 00:07, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
- Support, Google Scholar results indicate that "European Hippopotamus" is not a commonly used name. See also WT:MAMMAL#Common names. Ucucha 04:06, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
- Considering the trand and overall lack of interest, when the move discussion is closed would you consider doing the move Ucucha? I would but I only have the access level to preform cut and paste moves. --Kevmin (talk) 05:34, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
- I gladly would, but I am not an admin here, so I won't be of much help. Ucucha 14:14, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the page move Anthony. --Kevmin (talk) 23:27, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
