National Monuments

edit

I'm very surprised an article on the National Monuments Record has no mention of what a National Monument actually is, especially as there are statutory implications to this designation. The article reads like an EH publicity blurb. Stronach (talk) 08:54, 31 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

I think that the 'national monuments record' is an organisation (ie a sub-department of English Heritage which was merged with it in April 1999 see: http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=2146411215). A 'national monument' in the statutory sense that is a piece of 'stuff' which is protected by legislation, is I think, a 'Scheduled Monument' - see the new pdf from the DCMS at www.culture.gov.uk/images/publications/ScheduledMonuments.pdf and also 'Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979'. That defines a 'Scheduled Monument' as:

  • any building, structure or work, whether above or below the surface of the land, and any cave or excavation;
  • any site comprising the remains of any such building, structure or work or of any cave or excavation; or
  • any site comprising, or comprising the remains of, any vehicle, vessel, aircraft or other moveable structure or part thereof which neither constitutes nor forms part of a monument as defined above.

In Scotland they are referred to as 'Historial Monuments' ( see www.rcahms.gov.uk/). From a quick scan of Google, 'National Monument' seems to be an American term. FGLawson (talk) 09:53, 31 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
