WW2
editWhat happened during WW2? Did Monaco have borders with Italy (which seized the Riviera), Vichy France or occupied France? Did some of belligerant governments threaten with seizing Monaco? Was it a hotspot of espionage? Refugees? Did Monegasque troops fight? In which side?
I was wondering that same thing. It would seem odd that if, when all of France was occupied by the germans after the Normandy invasion, that Hitler would have left little Monaco alone.
Monaco was under Italian, then German occupation. See the article on Prince Louis II.
- it seems odd to mention that Monaco was not under Grimaldi rule during the French occupation and not to mention that it was not under Grimaldi rule during part of the second world war. --Peterk2 (talk) 17:40, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- Monaco was officially neutral during World War II, although it retained close ties to Vichy France and adopted Vichy's pro-German position. Prince Louis II remained the ruler of Monaco the entire time. Dick Kimball (talk) 12:59, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
the Greek
editSince the name goes to the Greek er, I gather that the fact that the Grimaldis disguised themselves as monks has no actual relation to the name. And hence the coat of arms is not armes parlant.
- Fact? The folk etymology, devised for a name that had become mysterious with time, spawned the explanatory myth, as happens all the time with Greek myths that "explain" archaic rites and things... and with many myths in other cultures, I'm sure. --Wetman 01:32, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
No mention of Menton and Roquebrune?
editThey are listed in main page but not in specialised subpage. Pavel Vozenilek 15:30, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Ligurian language - indo european or not?
editThe article says "...the ancient Ligurian language, which was apparently not Indo-European..." Yet the article Ligurian language says "Very little is known about this language... which is generally believed to have been Indo-European..." Well which is it? Rise of the Grimaldis
editThe statement that "...the area remained under the control of the Grimaldi family to the present day, except when under French control from 1793 to May 17, 1814." is not correct. As the Wikipedia entry Template:Timeline rulers of Monaco shows, Monaco was under the control of Genoa three times in the fourteenth century and once again in the fifteenth, as well as briefly being occupied by Milan also in the fifteenth century. Dick Kimball (talk) 12:56, 30 March 2009 (UTC)
Geographic extent
editHas the geographic extent ever been larger then its current borders and where would I be able to see this map?70.160.75.159 (talk) 04:37, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
It was larger until 1860, but still very small. john k (talk) 14:38, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
Rise of the Grimaldis?
editSo the whole history of Monaco as a distinct entity is contained in one section of the article? That's silly. john k (talk) 14:38, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
Blacklisted Links Found on the Main Page
editCyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request it's removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. Please be aware that the bot will replace removed tags, and will remove misplaced tags regularly.
