Beware of recentism

edit

This article is slanted towards recent times - at the moment the sections covering 1881-1992 contain 2,342 words, then for the years 1992-2011 we've got 7,576 words! That amount of detail is really good, but most of it should be moved into the season-by-season articles (e.g. 2011-12 NUFC season - here's an example of a "Good" season article).

This one should only cover historic events and changes - I know the stuff since 1992 means a lot to most of us, but historically Glenn Roeder's unsuccessful transfer bids weren't as important as the 3 championships or 4 FA Cups Newcastle won between 1895 & 1914 (which this section hardly even mentions). If I have time, I'll move some of the less important paragraphs.

Really good point. I'm guilty for some amount of the quantity ending up here in a bid to get the main Newcastle United F.C. article up to GA, mainly for simplicity in cleaning that article up. This article and the season article will really benefit if you can reshuffle some of the text around, and maybe we could even get some of them up to GA quality in time...? With a bit of shifting, the word count is down to 2,247 for events up to 1992, and 2,986 words for the history since then. There's still scope for editing down the sections on 2004-2011 more (moving content to the season articles), as long as the biggest events are described concisely throughout the article. - Responsible? I've edited the article again: so now it's 2,251 words for before Keegan was manager, against 876 words since Keegan's first managerial reign. That means 28% of the article covers events post-1992, which is a fairer proportion.

Reduction in Detailed events

edit

Hi,

I've noticed that this page has undergone a major reduction in detail of events between 1992 to the present.

I understand that excessive/unnecessary detail has to be monitored and kept to neutral opinions etc, however previously there were notable and citable events that were responsibly detailed relating to the events taking place between 1992 to the present, particularly the manager's most successful and notable results, as well as events that sparked controversy within the media as well as other clubs. I understand a brief description on the club's main Wikipedia page, but this page should not be so brief it should offer more elaboration of the events, not less.

Notable events that are not detailed are Keegan's 5-0 over Man U, Kenny's decision to sell Keegan's stars such as Les Ferdinand (and how unsuccessful talks to unwrap the deal emerged), as well as the fans displeasure with the cautious brand of football he played as oppose to Keegan's swash buckling attacking style. Ruud's fallout with Shearer and Rob Lee is not well detailed as it should be, and Robson's success and acknowledgement from other club's, players, managers about his ongoing run at Newcastle, as well as his treatment by the board by offering and singing players behind his back, and his critique of young players demanding all the perks. His decision not to sign Boumsong, yet how Souness unbelievably signed him for £8m after he joined his previous club for free. On Souness, several things have not been detailed, his fallout with Bellamy, falling out of europe, the critique of his managing style from his players. Roeder one an argue there isnt much to tell, but the 5-1 defeat to Birmingham was a highlight of his time at Newcastle and has been left out. Sam's time as manager has a bit more to tell, how Freddy brought him in knowing the takeover was inevitable, and how he players were not happy under him. Keegan'w return is ridiculously brief, and his resolve of his dispute with the club should not have been removed. As is Chris Hughton's success int he championship and the backlash from fans when he was fired. Pardew's reign is simply too brief.

I am going to have to edit the page to add more detail to attract more enjoyable content to read. Please keep the breif statements to the clubs main wikipedia page.#

Thanks,

"Ridiculously brief"

edit

How about researching more information on this?

"The Magpies lifted the League Championship on three occasions (in 1905, 1907, 1909). They also reached five FA Cup finals in the years leading up to World War I in 1914, winners in 1910, and FA Cup runners-up in 1905, 1906, 1908 and 1911."

An important time in the club's history, and it's virtually ignored in this article.

The section in Newcastle United F.C.#History is even worse.
