First House of Commons in Shrewsbury
editThe article does not appear to say that the First House of Commons was in Shrewsbury [1]. Comments? Jniech (talk) 14:21, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
- I think it's a dubious claim at best. So many places in England claim to be home of the first Parliament or first this or that. David (talk) 14:43, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
- Can I ask who else claims to have held the first House of Commons in their town/city? Wikipedia is about what can be shown not what we think. As other encyclopaedias [2], major news organisations [3] and numerous other sites[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] say it is Shrewsbury I would say it should be in the article with perhaps a reference to the other claims provided there is proof of their claim. Jniech (talk) 08:20, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
- Fine, put it in the article then. David (talk) 08:34, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
- Do you have examples of other claims which I can reference to show it may not be true? Jniech (talk) 10:34, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
Foundation
editI have removed the references to a possible Roman foundation as unsubstantiated. The name means something like "scrub-bury" and first occurs in 901. It is not clear whether scrub is a personal name "Scrobb" or refers to vegetation. It is likely that any urban population still at Viroconium was moved to Shrewsbury, but I would suggest that c.900 is the most likely date for this. This is the period when a number of fortified burhs were built in Mercia, to stabilise the country under English control at the time of Danish invasion. Unfortunately, unless archaeology yields results the status of the town before 900 is a matter of speculation. Peterkingiron (talk) 22:01, 22 December 2008 (UTC)
