Question on organization/content

edit

This article right now seems to be primarily a duplication of information about people/places that are related to Judaism in Brazos County, but it does not detail the "history of the Jews in Brazos County, Texas". Generally a "history of" article should talk about events that have occurred in a chronological manner, rather than a description of a few people and a few places. When people are highlighted in "a history of" article, it should be for how their actions impacted the community; from this article and Tarlow's I don't see how any claim that his actions have impacted the Jewish community in any way. Tarlow is also not even listed as being Jewish anywhere, and that will probably need to be documented somehow.

Basically, I'm worried that the article has not established its own notability (separate from the people/places it mentions), and that this clustering could better take place in a category or list. Is there information about the actual history of Judaism in Brazos County that could be put here instead? How can the article be improved to actually reflect its subject? I was WP:BOLD and tried to rearrange the material into a more cohesive article that actually discussed the history of the Jewish community. I did delete some information that can be found in other articles or did not seem to have direct bearing on the history of the community in this location. I had a few questions when trying to do this, though. Do you have information on when Temple Freda was founded? Was it the first community place for worship in Brazos County? Is it the third oldest active religious center in Brazos County (it wasn't clear before)? When did the first Jewish people arrive in the county? What did they do before Temple Freda was founded? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Karanacs (talkcontribs) 18:48, 24 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Merger proposal

edit

Texas A&M Hillel could be merged into this article, unless that article is likely to be expanded beyond a stub.EagleAg04 (talk) 04:28, 1 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • No merge Both articles merit attention. One is a general history including many notable subjects. Also, Texas A&M Hillel is "the oldest Hillel organization of any university in the United States." This alone is very notable. Both articles have sources and are notable by themselves. Bhaktivinode (talk) 03:03, 6 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose Do not merge. Both articles are distinct and represent a distinctly different people and history. --Nsaum75 (talk) 03:16, 6 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Support Merge. It would be more a redirect then a merge because all the info on the Hillel is basically already included in this article. The Hillel article looks like it will be a perma-stub. How much is there to say already? This article would be greatly enhanced by a separate section in the article about the Hillel. --brewcrewer (yada, yada) 04:43, 6 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Support Merge. Most of the content in the Texas A&M Hillel article is overlapped by this article, and the Hillel article lacks enough text. Those are two of the valid reasons for merge in WP:MERGE. Also, the Hillel is lacking multiple sources with significant coverage, which suggested that it would fit better within a broader article.[1] A redirect always remains after article mergers, and in this case it could redirect to a new Hillel section of this article. The combination of the two articles could result in one better article.EagleAg04 (talk) 22:02, 6 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Update I have added 5 additional reliable sources to the Texas A&M Hillel article and expanded on its history in Brazos County with Temple Freda. Texas A&M Hillel is a notable subject worthy of its own article, though there is room for expansion. With this information, I strongly Oppose Merge. Bhaktivinode (talk) 19:18, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
    • Comment I agree that the Texas A&M Hillel is notable. It looks like both articles could now stand on their own thanks to all of the great work you have done researching and improving them, but would a combined article (with Hillel as a major section) be easier to maintain and develop into a WP:GA? It would also be great if we could find some free images of the Hillel and Temple Freda to add to each of those articles (see m:Free image resources). EagleAg04 (talk) 01:46, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
      • Reply Good suggestion, both articles need images and I will try to find images for both. Also, if you agree that Texas A&M Hillel is notable and "could now stand alone," then I would like to ask that you please withdrawl your nomination to merge this subject - if you feel this to be appropriate. I feel that the Texas A&M Hillel article may now stand alone with its five additional reliable sources that I recently added, they assist in establishing notability. Bhaktivinode (talk) 02:22, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
        • Reply My merge proposal was never about notability in the first place, but rather about what could help bring one of these articles to WP:GA status. Over half of the content in the Hillel article still in overlapping and duplicated in other articles or is not directly about Texas A&M Hillel, and these concerns have still not been addressed. If a merged section of an article becomes long enough it can always be split into a separate article again using the WP:SUMMARY style. Since at least one other editor was in support of this merge, this discussion should not be closed early unless WP:Consensus has been reached. EagleAg04 (talk) 02:44, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Rename proposal

edit

Notwithstanding the merger proposal, this article shoule be renamed Judaism in Brazos County, Texas because most of the article's content is about the current Judaism situation on Brazos County, not its history. --brewcrewer (yada, yada) 04:43, 6 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • Abstain This article still contains a significant amount history that could be expanded, so I would agree with the current title. However, if additional content becomes merged with this article, that may change.EagleAg04 (talk) 22:08, 6 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose Rename This article covers over 140 years of history. Granted, the earlier history needs to be expanded upon to balance the article. Though, as the Texas A&M Hillel article was expanded today to include an historic event from 50 years ago, in the same way, this article can continue to be expanded. Bhaktivinode (talk) 02:32, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose Article could stand to have some expansion of earlier historical information, however I think its best served by its current title. The Texas A&M Hillel article aside (as it is something distinctly different), most of the information about Jews in small Texas towns is in the past, not in the present. This is unfortunate, but a fact of life. --Nsaum75 (talk) 10:05, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
