Article coordination
editThis article was originally splintered from Tobacco (agriculture). Since these articles are invariably linked, it is important to coordinate summaries and updates. ChyranandChloe (talk) 02:07, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
Bias in Section "Contemporary"
edit"To reduce the harm that tobacco has made to humankind?" Not only is that a little over dramatic, it seems a bit biased to me. 69.226.234.44 (talk) 00:04, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
- I changed the wording, and there's more information if you want it in this report by the WHO.[1] This article hasn't really received much attention, so the quality's kind of down. If you want to improve it, feel free. ChyranandChloe (talk) 06:01, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
tobacco/history/traditions/american
editJust wanted to mention that there is an article in wikipedia that should be linked. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24NeiKaaro (talk • contribs) 00:50, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
Hallucinogenic?? I doubt it. I have smoked a cigar made from a variety of tobacco 300yrs old. Harvested from the bush in New Guinea. (The Dutch introduced tobacco there.) While the cigar was so strong it made me feel a bit ill, I did *not* have visions of any sort. Politically-correct turds have been vandalizing the article; no surprise in that. There should be a simple link to tobacco harm, rather every ignorant SOB cutting and pasting the text into this article.203.220.105.20 (talk) 04:49, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Australian Aborigines smoking? Indonesian fishermen landed in desert areas northwestern Australia. Indonesians may given or traded tobacco for shells. There is no evidence of widespread smoking in these Aboriginal tribes. This sounds like another Reynoldsian fanatasy, such as a 40000 year old proof of the Goldbach hypothesis.203.220.105.20 (talk) 05:04, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
missing section
editWhere is the section about the history of the discovery that smoking is one of the causes of cancer? It was a huge political issue at the time. 92.14.238.21 (talk) 15:51, 13 June 2010 (UTC)
use of "tobah" incorrectly credited to Sir Walter Raleigh
edit"Sir Walter Raleigh is credited with taking the first "Virginia" tobacco to Europe, referring to it as tobah as early as 1578."
This is a sentence repeated throughout the Internet without citation. While it is disturbing to see this copied and pasted across the Internet and appearing here on Wikipedia, it's also blatantly wrong. Sir Walter Raleigh should be replaced with Sir Francis Drake. Strangely, this sentence above is a weird versioning of:
"Sir Francis Drake referred to tobah as early as 1578, and was the first to take Virginia tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) to Europe, according to Fairholt." From Handbook of American Indians North of Mexico Volume 4/4 T-Z By Frederick Webb Hodge (1912), page 768.
Other sources confirming Drake's connection to this "tobah" term (not Raleigh), and information about "tobah" -
Drake's use of "tabah" can be found in https://archive.org/details/worldencompassed16drak - see the index for what is actually spelled in this edition as "tabah." usage of tobacco in "ethnobotany"
editIn "tobacco is also used in ethnobotany for medical treatment of physical conditions" the word "ethnobotany" is clearly incorrect, as the whole paragraph describes the uses of tobacco in traditional medicine, not in the science that studies those traditions. --82.131.25.76 (talk) 00:08, 11 March 2017 (UTC)
Incorrect monetary units 'European Usage' section.
edit'English statute...duty on..' etc "6s 10p" is a mixture of current British and pre-decimalisation (1971) abbreviations. Six shillings plus ten pennies in Elizabethan England would have been written as 6s 10d (in much later times, this would have been written as 6/10 without the 's' or the 'd'). Similarly, the original per-pound duty on tobacco would have been 2d not 2p.
We can be sure the author isn't using post-decimalisation units because the shilling vanished in 1971. After that date, 6s 10d would have become (approximately) 34p (£0.34).2A01:4B00:AE0E:6200:DC7D:D977:5E79:92BB (talk) 07:08, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
Ancient Egypt
editThe mummy Ramses II was reported to have had chopped or ground tobacco leaves placed in his innards. (Balout, L. & C Robet (eds.). 1985. La Momie de Ramès II. Editions Recherche sur les Civilizations, pp.182-191 & 383. Mentioned along with a claim of its presence in Mesopotamia and on p. 146 (with a missing reference to "Teyo" of " " by Sesli and Yegenoglu, 2018, "Tobacco in the Historical Process" in Science, Ecology and Engineering Research in the Globalizing World) . That the mummy case might involve contamination is suggested by L. Sansone et al. (2023) in Nicotine: From Discovery to Biological Effects. Journals IJMS Volume 24 Issue 19 (https://doi.org/10.3390/ijms241914570) but not proven. I think this alleged presence should be mentioned in the article.Kdammers (talk) Kdammers (talk) 03:13, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
Filters
editThe word "filter" only occurs once in the article, yet in the late '50s or early '60s, the use of filters made a big splash in the U.S. Kdammers (talk) 16:14, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
