Big mistake
edit"Rabbi Hiyya bar Abba" is an amora living in the Land of Israel, of the 3th generation. The correct name is Rabbi Hiyya. Yanbushad 20:42, 7 April 2007 (UTC).
I was wondering if the Rabbi Hiyya this article talks about is the same Rabbi Hiyya who the story of Abraham smashing the idols is attributed to?? thanksGelrunner1020 (talk) 05:54, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
Actually, not the precise big mistake. Both the 3rd generation Amora living in the land of Israel and the first generation of the land of Israel were named Rabbi Chiyya bar Abba. To disambiguate, the earlier one is sometimes called Rabbi Chiyya Rabba, meaning "the Elder". Some edits have put information about the elder into the article for the later. I've just edited both pages to help disambiguate the two. There are articles about each of these Rabbi Chiyya bar Abbas in Jewish Encyclopedia, so I made sure that each article has the proper link to the relevant sage.--67.82.190.59 (talk) 01:19, 9 September 2016 (UTC)
Solving the maze of the Hiyya sages
edit- R. Hiyya - Amora of the Land of Israel, of the first generation of the Amoraim sages.
- Rabbi Hiyya b. [ben/Bar] Abba - Amora of the Land of Israel, of the third generation of the Amoraim sages.

Additional note
editThis article seems to be about both sages:
- R. Hiyya - Active in Tiberias (mentioned in this article) - lived there
- Rabbi Hiyya b. [ben/Bar] Abba was a dicipline of Yochanan bar Nafcha and Eleazar ben Pedath (mentioned in this article), but lived in third generation of Amoraim (290 – 320 CE), not as mentioned in the article (the article says: 180-230 AD)

- - - The diagram is confusing. I would rather see separate diagrams of teacher-student trees OT1H, and parent-child trees OTOH... even if this introduces some redundancy where, e.g. a child is also a student...jgo
