"South" Debate/RfC

I came over here from the RfC page, and as a geography student I can tell you that you're better off saying the south side of the harbor as opposed to the south of the harbor. Harbors are not points, they have an area to cover. If the point in question is in the harbor but south of center, it's appropriate to say the "south side" as opposed to just "south". If the point is beyond the harbor to the south, then you'd say "south of the harbor". It's incorrect, however, to say "the south of the harbor". --Martin Osterman 19:59, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

i agree south side is grammatically correct. but how about being more informative: "The island is also sometimes referred to as "the Island side", as opposed to the Kowloon Peninsula side of the Victoria Harbour." Appleby 06:29, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
I think that would work just fine, actually. I was just stating which of the two was correct. :) --Martin Osterman 12:13, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
Agree with the above. Call it "south side". enochlau (talk) 08:17, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
People would say "the Island side" and "the Kowloon side". — Instantnood 09:25, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
The island is not in the harbour (nor in the southern part of the harbour), but south of the harbour. — Instantnood 09:25, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
Bah. "Part of the north shore of the island forms the south side of the harbour" is correct. The island lies south of the harbor, but only because it lies [very immediately!] south of its northern shore, which forms one side of the harbor. Tomertalk 06:31, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

Data references

There is no reference for where the population, pop density, island area, etc comes from. Especially when comparing different geographic locations it is necessary to know what the source is for these details to know if the data can be trusted and to compare similar dates. I'm not saying this data is incorrect, just that I would like to see references for it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 218.255.116.40 (talkcontribs) 2007-07-23 01:37:00

The population is inaccurate. The data used includes the total of the Southern District. However, that district includes Ap Lei Chau, a separate island immediately south of Hong Kong Island with a population of about 86,000. Since they don't live on the island, they should not be included. Also, the 2011 census is out now and should be used. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 222.166.181.81 (talk) 12:34, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

hk island area code?

long shot here wondering if anyine knows the area code many thanks Earlyviewer (talk) 11:27, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Hong Kong doesn't have area codes. The country code is 852. Within all of HK, a phone number has a fixed length eight digit number consisting of two sets of four. The first set of four may roughly correspond to an area but HKI would have dozens. SchmuckyTheCat (talk)
Yes, Hong Kong simplifies the system of telphone numbers long ago. For interest only, nowadays, most of older fixed line on the island started with 25 or 28, and before the simplication, the area code of the Island is 5. — HenryLi (Talk) 00:29, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
aha thank you both for your explnations. many thanks Earlyviewer (talk) 01:00, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Why was it returned to the Chinese ?

The Wiki page says - "China and Britain later signed the Treaty of Nanking in 1842, ceding the island "in perpetuity" to Great Britain ". So why was it given back in 1997 ? Travel writer Michel Palin said "These are what will revert to China in 1997, and there is bad feeling here that Mrs Thatcher should have thought it necessary to include Hong Kong Island and Southern Kowloon in the deal." (http://palinstravels.co.uk/book-48). So HK Island was not part of the 99 year lease ?? Or it was ?? Where does Thatcher come into all this ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.96.181.130 (talk) 08:43, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

Transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong gives an overview. Entire books have been written on this "why" question. Basically: China wouldn't have it any other way, insisting that the perpetual treaties were invalid (as were the leases). HK Island and the peninsula tip at Kowloon would not have been economically, militarily, or politically viable without the rest of the land area. There would be no source of fresh water, for one.
The other article is the place to start reading and asking this questions for better attention. SchmuckyTheCat (talk)

Original local name

Does anyone know what the name of the Island prior to 1842 might have been? Enlil Ninlil (talk) 00:55, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

Famous for hiking

As a Hong Konger, I agree that the mountain ranges on the Island is famous for hiking. But I think it is just an opinion so I don't think it is suitable putting this sentence in the introduction. Or maybe we can put a fact sentence, like xxxx(an unknown number) people go hiking there every year or there are xx kilometres. Or other suggestions?Wumanhoanson (talk) 13:49, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

Map

I was hoping to find a map here, showing where the various locations like Quarry Bay are located. I think it would be a good addition to this article. Kendall-K1 (talk) 19:45, 6 October 2014 (UTC)
