There are two types of seat on an elephant: 1) ambari [Hindi: aṃbārī (अंबारी). The Oxford Hindi-English Dictionary], a seat with a canopy 2) howdah [Hindi: haudā (हौदा)], a seat without a canopy.
This article does not distinguish between the two.
