Human bone

edit

This appears to be the only article on a particular bone that specifies it's for the human bone only. I don't think that's a good distinction to make, the mandible (a.k.a. "dentary") is common to all mammals, and most vertebrates. I realise that most, if not all, the entries on individual bones are anthropocentric, but I don't see any reason to make them more so. Suggest the note be removed.

Most of the article is on the human mandible, as are most of the other articles on bones whether or not they specify this. It's not that this article is only for the human bone but it mostly is because that's where we're at at the moment. The usage of the word "dentary", is, AFAIK, limited to animals (all the doctors and dentists I've spoken to say it's the mandible, not the dentary), so it only deserves a short mention and is certainly not equivalent to the mandible in meaning. Somewhere down the line, someone created a Mandibula article to refer to jaws of vertebrates, while mandible being human. I have not come across this distinction before (it is puzzling to me). I redirected the Mandibula article to this one, and agree, the comparative information would be useful. --TeaDrinker (talk) 00:57, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Merge with Jaw?

edit

Disagree. There is an entry for each bone of the human body individually. This is one of the set. For the same reason, I would not merge fibula with leg or sternum with torso.--King Hildebrand 17:05, 23 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Chin bone

edit

Isn't this also called a chin bone? I think its a knicker knock bone!

overview image

edit

I'm thinking if it would be good to put a kind of "overview" image with a highlighted place the jaw.

Only human?

edit

This aticle seems to describe mandible as if it was a term only concerned by human anatomy... Other vertebrates don't have "mandibles" ? and what about insects, like ants or some species of Coleoptera? 343KKT Kintaro (talk) 05:43, 22 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Muscles

edit

Could we have a section here describing which muscles in humans create the basic jaw actions? Muscles of mastication only describes those which move it laterally for grinding. I can't find a list of all muscles which close the jaw and which open it. I think it might be related to front neck flexion. Bonechamber (talk) 21:34, 20 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Proposed merge with Ossification of mandible

edit

I have proposed this merge, between the 'ossification' page and this article, because:

  • I feel it is needlessly fragmented to have two separate pages.
  • It is standard on Anatomy pages, and recommended in WP:MEDMOS#Anatomy, for 'Development' sections to be displayed on the same page.
  • Additionally, this page is small and it would give more context to have the information displayed in a central location, rather than hidden on a separate article.
  • If necessary, this article could be expanded at a later date. LT910001 (talk) 07:10, 29 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
