IAR 95 and FC-1

In 1986 China signed a US$550 million agreement with Grumman to modernise its J-7 (Chinese copy of the MiG-21 Fishbed) fighter aircraft under the "Super-7" upgrade project. Western companies from the US and Britain were competing to provide the engine and avionics. The project was cancelled in early 1990, in the wake of the cooling of political relations with the West, as well as in response to a 40% increase in the cost of the project. However, Chengdu managed to continue the programme with its own resources and the project was re-branded as FC-1 (Fighter China-1).
Yet, I see a striking similarity in looks and performances, and we can't have an article that states:
The IAR-95 looked identical to the Chinese FC-1, a joint Chinese-Pakistani fighter jet designed in the 1990s. There was some cooperation between the military industries of Romania and China so it is likely that the design for the IAR-95 was sold to China and became the FC-1.
Note: Please refer to the FC-1 page for FC-1 information. IAR 95 is NOT related to FC-1.

I think some of the comparable aircraft you listed are not really comparable. The FC-1, Mig-29, and Tornado are the only ones I would say are comparable. Maybe also add F-16 in there. The others are beyond the IAR-95's league, especially the Su-34 which is in a class all its own. Edrigu 22:32, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
