Article
editLarge portions of this page are copied from the presumably copyright-free US army site, [1]. -- Itai 17:10, 15 Jun 2004 (UTC)
The site actually refers to this as the "Iceland Defense Force", not "Icelandic". This article may need to be renamed. --Ilya 23:55, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- If I didn't misunderstand your statement here above (and yes, I know it's like 5 years since you posted this comment) but no, it does not need to be renamed, because "Iceland Defence Force" is it's correct name, especially since it was manned by the United States armed forces.. And that sort of explains why it isn't called Icelandic defence force.. Because it's American. The "Iceland Defence Force" phrase is also featured on the emblem of the "Iceland Defence Force" currently on this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Iceland-Def-Force-logo.jpg —Preceding unsigned comment added by MrGulli (talk • contribs) 00:55, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
Iceland Defense Force
editFYI, IDF stands for "Iceland Defense Force", not "Icelandic Defense Force" as it's defined in this article. You can verify this by visiting their web page at http://www.nctskef.navy.mil/IDF/. IDF also has almost zero Army personnel; the base is roughly 50-50 Navy and Air Force. There is a Marine Corps security force on the base, though. And the website is a Navy website, not an Army one. I spent 2 1/2 years on the IDF staff when I was in the Navy -- best tour I had my entire career.

edit"On March 15th, 2006 the United States Ambassador to Iceland announced the decision of the United States to withdraw the Iceland Defense Force before the end of September 2006." Source? Doidimais Brasil 03:10, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
- If the blog of the Icelandic Minister of Justice and ecclesiastical affairs is considered "canon" enough. "http://www.bjorn.is/pistlar/nr/3489" though this is in Icelandic, ,,að hinn 15. mars tilkynnti Bandaríkjastjórn utanríkisráðherra og forsætisráðherra, að fyrir lok september yrðu bandarísku herþoturnar á brott frá Íslandi. means: "On the 15 march the american government announced to the foreign minister and prime minister that the american jets will be gone from Iceland before the end of september." Further information: http://www.bjorn.is/greinar/nr/3486. And official report from the foreign ministry: http://www3.utanrikisraduneyti.is/frettaefni/frettatilkynningar/nr/2999 I don't know of anything in english or other languages though. --Kjallakr 23:02, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
- The US State Department mentions it on their website regarding the country background for Iceland http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/3396.htm Being as the one cited on the page doesn't seem to work for me, not sure if it's occuring for other people. Shadowrun 18:19, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
