Edition dates and updates
editI've updated the article to make sense of the various editions. I own copies of every edition and have taken the information directly from the original sources. The first single-authored edition by Bothamley, assumed to be published in 1890 [has anyone seen an original first edition?], has no publication date in the book itself, although adverts in the back of the book sometimes offer a date (e.g December 1891 in my own copy). There are many revisions of the Bothamley edition ranging from 1891 to approx. 1925. The first multi-authored edition, edited by George E. Brown, is assumed to be from around 1935 however no date is given in that Manual either.
The publication date of the 10th edition is somewhat confusing. I purchased my copy directly from Taylor & Francis Group (who own Focal Press at the time of writing in Nov. 2023) which has a copyright date of 2009, whereas PDF versions of the book published by ELSEVIER have a copyright date of 2011. I've chosen the earlier 2009 date since I own a paper copy of that book. Egrabczewski (talk) 22:26, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
What was the Title of the Manual in 1890?
editSome claim that since 'Ilford, Limited' was not formed unti 1901 then the original Manual must have been named "Manual of Photography" when it was first published in 1890. However my own copy of the book has a date of 1891 in a Price List at the back fo the book, yet this Manual states "Manual of Photography" on the front cover, "Ilford Manual of Photography" on the spine and "The Ilford Manual of Photography" on the title page, where it also states that this is a "Revised and Stereotyped Edition." with no printing volume number, and published by "The Britannia Works Co., Limited. Ilford, London, E.". Since this is one of the earliest copies and pre-dates the formation of Ilford, Limited by at least ten years then it suggests that the word "Ilford" in the title does not refer to a Company but either to the town of Ilford or, more likely, to the 'Ilford' trademark used in selling their photographic plates. If anyone finds an original 1890 copy of the Manual then we will know for sure how the original edition was titled. Egrabczewski (talk) 20:13, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
