Location within Omaha

edit

Is this bridge located at 41°16′41″N 95°53′28″W / 41.27806°N 95.89111°W / 41.27806; -95.89111? The aerial photo in Google Maps seems to match the description in the article. It might be useful to put the coordinates in the infobox, and also to put a text description of the location in the article. I'm reluctant to do so myself, since I'm not sure if I've got the right location, and since I don't know Omaha-CB well enough to describe the location in terms of useful landmarks on either side of the river. That's right, Ammodramus. I don't know how to locate coordinates, otherwise I'd add them in myself. Can you show me how to? • Freechildtalk 18:34, 14 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
I used Google Earth to find the coordinates. I set things to a fairly high magnification, then worked along the Missouri until I found half a bridge. The latitude and longitude at the cursor displayed in DMS format at the bottom of the screen. Be careful if you switch to a different window and then switch back; sometimes you get incorrect coordinates after that, and you have to nudge the mouse a bit to get the right ones back. For that reason, too, I always double-check in Preview once I've filled in the {{Coord}} template.
You can also get decimal lat-long coordinates from Google Maps. Right-click on your point, then select "What's here?", and the coordinates should show up in the search box.
Incidentally, I haven't forgotten about all the Omaha articles you've written that want photos; I just haven't been to Omaha in the last several months. One reason for trying to get the coordinates was so that I'd know where the bridge was before my next expedition that way.

From everything I've read it's easier to access the bridge from the Council Bluffs side... Good luck - I look forward to seeing your result! Oh, and you know the reason why you saw half the bridge, right? It was swung open. • Freechildtalk 22:30, 14 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
