Some people think Inmarsat is a bully and there is some article that seem to support the claim. [1], [2], [3] and [4]

Some people think vague disparagement is food for Wikipedia. In April of 1999, Inmarsat was fully privatized by transferring its assets and operations to Inmarsat Ltd., a U.K. corporation that enjoys no privileges or immunities.(cuddlyable3)84.210.139.189 18:03, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

incoming calls

edit

does the caller pay all the cost? or is it split between caller and callee or what? Plugwash 12:39, 21 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

No callee always pay... If you dial an inmarsat terminal you will be charge for it, not the owner of the terminal.

The current reference "International Mobile Satellite Organization" no longer refers to Inmarsat as described in the article, but to a separate organization commonly referred to as IMSO. IMSO is a regulatory body, working in conjunction with and reporting to the International Maritime Organization, a UN body. IMSO's primary responsibility is to ensure that Inmarsat plc meets its obligations toward offering free-of-charge satellite safety services under the GMDSS (global maritime distress and safety system) umbrella, at a defined quality standard, to ships and aircraft. IMSO and Inmarsat were previously a single entity, originally called the International Maritime Satellite Organization and abbreviated as Inmarsat. "Maritime" was later changed to "Mobile". Inmarsat and IMSO were separated as part of the arrangement to commercialize Inmarsat in the 1990s. The term "Inmarsat" is now a name in itself and is no longer considered an acronym. Either "Inmarsat" or "Inmarsat plc" would be correct names for the organization described in the article; "International Mobile Satellite Organization" is incorrect as it refers to a different entity entirely.

Data-only charging?

edit

"Newer services using IP technology feature an always-on capability where the users are simply charged for the amount of data they send and receive rather than the length of time they are online."

It is unclear whether the above means "Newer services by Inmarsat..." or "Newer services than Inmarsat's..." ? I think the latter because I cannot imagine Inmarsat charging zero for a provided but unused data connection. (cuddlyable3) 84.210.139.189 14:44, 24 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

This has been clarified; your assumption was not correct.

Please sign your posts. I suppose that you (unsigned) am addressing me and telling me that I have assumed something wrongly. That would be interesting to have clarified. You (unsigned) say something has been clarified. May we all hear WHAT has been clarified? I still believe that an IP connection to Inmarsat COSTS MONEY before any user data is actually exchanged, if ever. Please address this issue if you can.Cuddlyable3 12:28, 30 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Inmarsat will not charge you if you start a background class service and do not send any data. There is however a small registration fee on the fleet broadband to get the terminal registered on the network. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.192.167.66 (talk) 23:02, 14 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Page name

edit

The content of this page should be moved to "Inmarsat" immediately. The page itself should not redirect to Inmarsat though, because IMSO exists (www.imso.org) and it is a different entity than Inmarsat. They primarily oversee Inmarsat distress operations. The way things are now, this article is plain wrong. I will do it myself in some days because this is pure misinformation, totally inappropriate for an encyclopedia. IMSO IS NOT INMARSAT. --   Avg    03:27, 1 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

talking nonsense

edit

I don't understand why, in the debate above, there was an insistence that "plc" was dropped. Inmarsat has been a plc for many years now; the requestor is still in the dark (preprivatization)age. On their website (www.inmarsat.com) it clearly shows at the bottom the official name: Inmarsat plc. The current name for this article is incorrect and misleading, not reflecting the changes to Inmarsat some ten? years ago.

Because of WP:NAME#Companies -- "The legal status of the company (Corp., plc, Inc. or LLC), is not normally included, i.e. Microsoft or Wal-Mart." "Inmarsat should be fine for an article title. --SigPig |SEND - OVER 06:45, 2 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
BTW, if Inmarsat is not the IMSO, then the article should be moved to Inmarsat (no "plc"). --SigPig |SEND - OVER 06:46, 2 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I have moved the content of the page to [Inmarsat]. I did not move the page itself because IMSO is worth a separate Wikipedia article and should not redirect to Inmarsat. --   Avg    22:05, 2 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Inmarsat terminals are not "Digital radios"

edit

This is a subset of what Inmarsat offers. The satellite modems where this term might (not with great accuracy) refer to, are only for data transfer. Inmarsat offers voice communications as well. Also it is misleading for the general public as it presupposes digital signal transmission. Inmarsat has a lot of analog services.--   Avg    11:57, 23 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
